New Radicals ‘You Get What You Give’ Re-Record With Benee as VMA Promo

MTV is airing a new version of the New Radicals’ anthemic 1998 hit “You Get What You Give” as a promo for the 2025 VMAs. In the new version, original members Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois trade vocals with New Zealand singer-songwriter Benee (“Supalonely”). The promo depicts various pop culture personalities passing the VMAs’ signature Moonperson trophy to one another. The lineup includes Paris Hilton, Steven Tyler, Nikki Glaser, Ciara, CBS Mornings’ Vlad Duthiers and LL COOL J. LL is slated to host this year’s VMAs on Sunday, Sept. 7. Hilton, Glaser and Ciara are set to present. The promo was the brainchild of Van Toffler, Gunpowder & Sky CEO, who is producing this year’s show. This marks Toffler’s return to the show following a decadelong absence. “Like a lot of my unrealistic ideas that hit at 3 a.m., I woke up with Gregg’s chorus in my head, called him at a ridiculous hour, and somehow he didn’t hang up,” Toffler said in a statement. “Now Benee’s belting with the New Rads as the VMA anthem – and if the 90s, 2000s, and 2020s can collide in one campaign, it’s proof that even decades later, music still finds new ways to connect.” The talent involved were also enthused about the collaboration. “Now is a bonkers time in the world, nothing seems real?!,” Alexander and Brisebois said in a statement. “So, when Video Music Awards visionary Van Toffler rang a few months ago asking if New Radicals would record a ‘Music in You’ duet with a future superstar, we thought we were hallucinating. … So here’s ‘Supalonely’ supastar BENEE with New Rads howling ‘You Got the Music in You!’ to honor Van’s demand. We had a blast making it and we hope you enjoy!” “You Get What You Give” made the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1999 even though it wasn’t released as a commercial single. It reached No. 30 on Radio Songs and went top 15 on Pop Airplay and Adult Pop Airplay. New Radicals released only one album, 1998’s Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too. Alexander disbanded the group in mid-1999 to focus on writing and producing songs for other artists. Alexander and Brisebois’ songwriting partnership continued, with the two receiving an Oscar nomination for best original song in 2015 for their song “Lost Stars” from the film Begin Again. Benee at the Billboard No. 1s Party held at the Keys on November 19, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. Gilbert Flores/Billboard via Getty Images Benee’s “Supalonely,” which featured Gus Dapperton, cracked the Hot 100 in early 2019. “I was so stoked to be asked to be a part of the project with New Radicals,” Benee said. “It was really cool working with Gregg and Danielle. They are incredibly talented songwriters, and it feels really special to be a part of reworking such an iconic song.” Hosted by LL COOL J, the VMAs are set to air live coast-to-coast from New York’s UBS Arena on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m., ET/5 p.m., PT on CBS, simulcast on MTV and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S. This year’s VMAs will be the first to air on CBS. Mariah Carey will receive this year’s Video Vanguard Award and will perform a career-spanning medley of hits. Busta Rhymes will receive the MTV VMA Rock the Bells Visionary Award, while Ricky Martin will be honored with the inaugural Latin Icon Award. MTV has also revealed details about the one-hour pre-show. Hosted by Nessa and Kevan Kenney with special performers KATSEYE, the pre-show airs live Sunday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m., PT on MTV and BET, BET Her, Comedy Central, CMT, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land and VH1. Also, the VMAs Extended Play Stage moves in-show for the first time, spotlighting a trio of first-time VMA nominees: Bailey Zimmerman feat. The Kid LAROI, Lola Young and Megan Moroney. Lady Gaga leads the pack at this year’s awards with 12 nominations, followed closely by her “Die With a Smile” collaborator Bruno Mars with 11. Other top contenders include Kendrick Lamar (10), Sabrina Carpenter (nine), ROSÉ (eight), Ariana Grande and The Weeknd (seven each), Billie Eilish and Tate McRae (six each), Charli xcx (five), and Alex Warren, Bad Bunny, Doechii, Ed Sheeran, Jelly Roll, Miley Cyrus and Morgan Wallen (four each). Jackie Barba is executive in charge of production. Wendy Plaut is executive in charge of celebrity talent. Lisa Lauricella is executive in charge of music talent. Source link

Portishead Added to Together for Palestine Gig Line-Up

A host of new names have been added to the bill for British musician and composer Brian Eno’s Together for Palestine concert, including legendary Bristol band Portishead. Explore See latest videos, charts and news Taking place at London’s OVO Arena Wembley on Sept. 17, the event will raise funds for the Choose Love charity, with all proceeds going to support Palestinian organizations providing humanitarian relief such as Taawon, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and Palestine Medical Relief Service. Tickets are sold out, but official merch is available to purchase here. The latest additions to the line-up include Celeste and Leigh-Anne, Palestinian artists Saint Levant, and El Far3i, and recent Coldplay tour support Elyanna, as well as actors Amer Hlehel, Benedict Cumberbatch, Charithra Chandran, Guy Pearce, Motaz Malhees and Ramy Youssef. Broadcasters Louis Theroux and Jameela Jamil, as well as Holocaust survivor Stephen Kapos, are also slated to make appearances. Portishead, meanwhile, will be reuniting after years of inactivity for a pre-recorded performance of their song “Roads.” Speaking about their involvement via a press release, the group said: “We are incredibly honoured to stand in solidarity with Palestine and be part of this crucial event. The genocide must stop.” Portishead last appeared together publicly in 2022 at a War Child UK benefit concert in Bristol. Otherwise, the band haven’t performed regularly since their last festival run in 2014, and have spent the past decade pursuing different musical and film endeavors, including a solo album from vocalist Beth Gibbons (2024’s Lives Outgrown).  “Together For Palestine will be a moment in history that we look back on and say we stood on the side of humanity, and I am honoured to be involved,” said Jameela Jamil in a statement. “It will be a night of music and hope, standing together with the Palestinian people. Working with Choose Love means the world to me and all the money raised will go to Palestinian-led partners providing life-saving support and humanitarian aid.” Guy Pearce added: “I feel utterly heartbroken every day witnessing the atrocities inflicted upon the innocent people of Palestine. It’s hard not to feel helpless. Being part of this concert will enable me to share my heart with others who also see the injustice in these horrific crimes. More importantly it enables me to show my support for and to the people of Gaza, and all those subjected to this brutal genocide. Hopefully this concert encourages more people to stand up and speak out.” They joined a stacked line-up of performers and guests, from Jamie xx, Damon Albarn and PinkPantheress to Bastille, King Krule, Greentea Peng, James Blake and more. Check out the full line-up below. Eno will serve as executive producer for the evening along with production managers Khaled Ziada, Khalid Abdalla and Tracey Seaward. The visuals for the event will be guided by Gazan painter Malak Mattar and directed by theatre-maker Amir Nizar Zuabi.    Source link

Kelsea Ballerini Surprise at Jonas Brothers Dallas Concert

Sibling trio Jonas Brothers had plenty of surprises for fans attending their concert in Dallas on Sunday night, as their JONAS20: Greetings From Your Hometown Tour stopped at the Dos Equis Pavilion. Among the unexpected moments was when Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas welcomed country singer-songwriter Kelsea Ballerini to the stage. “We have lived a lot of life already with this next performer. She’s really part of the family. A couple of years ago we had the wonderful pleasure of bringing her on tour, and throughout the years, we’ve had the fortune of doing several performances,” Nick Jonas said, setting up the crowd for Ballerini’s entrance to the stage. “But tonight, she was gracious enough to come out and be here for this incredible Dallas crowd. Please welcome to the stage our friend, your friend, Kelsea Ballerini.” The brothers joined Ballerini to sing a version of her 2015 ballad “Peter Pan,” before she joined them for the Jonas Brothers’ 2009 song “Fly With Me.” On social media, Ballerini was filled with gratitude, sharing a photo from the performance and writing on her Instagram Stories, “So lovely to be back with the boys in Dallas. Thanks for having me @jonasbrothers!!!” Ballerini previously opened shows for The Jonas Brothers on their Remember This Tour in 2021. The JoBros also treated the fans to other surprise appearances, welcoming Ryan Cabrera for “On The Way Down,” and bringing out Plain White T’s for a rendition of the group’s 2005 hit “Hey There Delilah.” Jonas Brothers also welcomed Fifth Harmony to reunite and perform their hits “Worth It” and “Work From Home.” Earlier this year, Ballerini spearheaded her own massive headlining tour and picked up an Academy of Country Music Awards nomination for entertainer of the year, as well as nominations for female artist of the year and music event of the year (for her Noah Kahan collab “Cowboys Cry Too”). Young Thug Says He Bought $50,000 of Streams for Gunna’s ‘DS4EVER’

Alleged phone calls made from jail by Young Thug have been leaked in recent days, as the YSL honcho faces snitching allegations stemming from a 2015 conversation with authorities surrounding a Lil Wayne tour bus shooting. Thugger continues to distance himself from Gunna, who was released nearly two years before Thug after reaching an Alford plea deal in the YSL RICO case in December 2022, as Thug believes his mentee snitched on him. One recent alleged jail phone call involving Thug found him claiming that he paid $50,000 for streams to help Gunna’s DS4EVER album debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 over The Weeknd’s Dawn FM in 2022. “Like, the No. 1 album you just had right now, I paid for you to have the No. 1 album,” he said.
”You didn’t honestly earn a No. 1 album over The Weeknd, my boy. I paid for that sh–. I never said anything to him.
I never told him that.” He continued: “We just got the plug on that. You never earned a No. 1 album.
I spent 50 extra grand buying motherf—ing streams for you.” Gunna earned his second No. 1 album atop the Billboard 200 in January 2022 in a tight race against The Weeknd. DS4EVER launched with 150,300 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Jan. 13, according to Luminate. The album’s first-week sales figure was nearly entirely comprised of streaming. SEA units comprised 144,600 (equaling 193.5 million on-demand official streams), while album sales held 4,700 and TEA units comprised 1,000. It was also the most-streamed album that week and Gunna added a Drake collaboration titled “P Power” to the project’s track list on the final tracking day. DS4EVER was on sale for $7.99 on the iTunes store and could be purchased digitally on his website for $4. As for The Weeknd, Dawn FM bowed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 148,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Jan. 13, according to Luminate. Of the total, SEA units made up 131,300 (equaling 173.04 million on-demand official streams of the album’s songs), while album sales bested Gunna’s total with 14,800 and TEA units comprised 1,900. Drake’s Second Bobbi Althoff Interview: 6 Things We Learned

Drake rarely sits down for interviews these days, but he reunited with Bobbi Althoff for round two on Tuesday (Sept. 2), when Althoff launched her Not This Again podcast. The duo originally linked up in 2023 for an interview but had a falling out that resulted in both parties agreeing to scrub the chat from YouTube. “Welcome to the nicest thing that any guy has ever done for you,” Drake quipped. “You came around at an interesting time in your life and I think that I took a lot of the weight and blame at that time when you needed to get a little active on somebody. I think I took some hits, verbally.” He added: “You made me feel like our interview was the reason your life was bad. So I just said I’m gonna get rid of the interview and you won’t ever have to see it again a day in your life.” Drake says the interview opened the floodgates for artists to sit down with more streamers instead of traditional media. “What we did changed a lot of things for a lot of people. It was me just recognizing somebody that I never met in my life that I fully believed in,” he said. “It pissed off all these f—ing losers and storied journalists who feel so entitled to this interview, ‘Drake never does anything for this type of media.’ And it made people so angry.” Drake continued: “It changed a lot of things in the streaming world, it made people feel more comfortable to sit down with somebody they’ve never sat down with before. … I feel like we did usher in the idea of you can be from two completely different walks of life. Celebrities, the goal is not to be some unattainable di–head for your whole life and only sit with Zane Lowe while he asks you the most curated and formal questions.” While the 6 God remains on the road overseas touring Europe, he and Bobbi delved into plenty of interesting topics throughout the 80-minute convo. Here are the top six things we learned from it. Defends Himself From ‘Culture Vulture’ Label Drake explained that he feels there are a lot of people who are “guilt-tripping” him in his life, although his intentions remain pure with how he’s moving. The conversation moved into the “culture vulture” label that gets thrown at him, which he pushed back on as an artist who swerves into numerous genres and lends his platform to plenty of emerging artists. “It’s the same way even in music. People will be like, ‘Oh, you’re a culture vulture.’ Or people will describe the collaborative efforts that I’ve put forth and the artists that I’ve picked up and lifted up or shone a light on as me taking,” he explained. “They’ll put a negative spin on it and try and tell me that it’s a self-serving thing or whatever, and I think I get really sensitive about that.”   He’s Destined to End Up With a ‘Goth Baddie’ Drake is still waiting to settle down and find the one, as he described his ideal woman as a “tweaked out goth tatted all over… A goth baddie with absolute o-cups.” When questioned by Althoff, he added that she needs to be funny and that type of woman can be found at Comic Con. Reflects on Spending Nine Hours in Swedish Jail Back in July 2022, Drake’s team reportedly dispelled rumors he was arrested in Sweden. However, Drake revealed he indeed was arrested during his Swedish trip, which resulted in him spending nine hours in Jail. “Because I got arrested for nothing,” he said. “Apparently, well, we did a private party and one of the guys, the officers, his girl came to the private party. But they arrested me way too aggressive and they arrested me for nothing.” Drake actually rapped about the scent of a “Swedish jail cell” on Her Loss cut “Middle of the Ocean.” He later posted footage of what appeared to be him being detained by authorities to social media. WWE Superstar Rhea Ripley Is His Current ‘Muse’ Drake often cites various women for creative inspiration, and his latest muse is WWE superstar Rhea Ripley, who’s all over his Instagram explore page. “My [For You page] is just all Rhea Ripley,” he said around the 28-minute mark. “She’s a wrestler. She’s like my muse, but I’m the opposite of probably everything that she likes.” He’s Not ‘Scared’ of Returning to Los Angeles Drake spent much of the 2010s tucked away in the Hidden Hills of swanky Calabasas before building his Toronto estate. Following the battle with Kendrick Lamar, many have wondered when Drake would return to L.A. and Althoff asked if he’s been “scared away from L.A.?” “Am I scared away? No,” he said, seemingly repulsed by the question. “I’ll be back.” Denies He’s Had Cosmetic Surgery to Enhance His Abs or Butt Drake faced allegations of having sculpted ads in June after posting a shirtless selfie in June, which appeared to have his six-pack edited, but he said that’s not the case. “No,” he replied when asked about ever having ab surgery. He also joked about Metro Boomin trolling him with the “BBL Drizzy” diss, but admitted he may used an app’s filter for the ab photo. “I think it was just like I came from the gym. I was sweaty in that pic,” he said. “Maybe I like heightened the saturation or something on it. I hit it too hard. They don’t look like that. You saw them.” Get weekly rundowns straight to your inbox Sign Up Source link

Laufey’s ‘A Matter of Time’ Bows Atop Multiple Billboard Album Charts

Laufey’s A Matter of Time tops multiple Billboard album charts, as the set debuts at No. 1 on Independent Albums, Jazz Albums, Traditional Jazz Albums and Vinyl Albums (all dated Sept. 6). The set — her third studio album — also makes top 10 arrivals on the overall all-genre Billboard 200 chart (No. 4, her first top 10 there) and the Indie Store Album Sales tally (No. 2). A Matter of Time is her second leader on Independent Albums, third on Jazz Albums and Traditional Jazz Albums, and first on Vinyl Albums. On the Billboard 200, Laufey’s previous high-water mark came with her breakthrough second studio set, Bewitched, which peaked at No. 18. Notably, on the Billboard 200, A Matter of Time marks the highest-debuting jazz album since the Dec. 1, 2018-dated chart, when Michael Bublé’s Love debuted and peaked at No. 2. (Jazz albums are defined as those that are eligible for, or have charted on, Billboard’s Top Jazz Albums chart.) A Matter of Time starts with 99,000 equivalent album units earned — Laufey’s biggest week ever — according to Luminate. Of that sum, album sales comprise 71,000 (her best sales week; it debuts at No. 2 on Top Album Sales), while streaming equivalent album units and track equivalent album units comprise the remaining sum. The set’s first-week sales were bolstered by its availability across eight vinyl and three CD variants (each with one signed edition) and a cassette. A Matter of Time was preceded by its chart hit “Silver Lining,” which reached No. 32 on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart in June. Equivalent album units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. All Sept. 6, 2025-dated charts will be posted in full on Billboard’s website on Sept. 3, one day later than usual, owed to the Labor Day holiday on Sept. 1 in the U.S. Source link

Drake Gets ‘Really Sensitive’ Over Being Called ‘Culture Vulture’

Drake doesn’t like being referred to as a culture vulture. The Toronto rapper sat down with media personality Bobbi Althoff for her new podcast Not This Again where he addressed things like their falling out after their much-publicized first interview, the fake abs allegations, his beef with Rick Ross, and being called a “culture vulture.” When the subject of their falling out came up, Drake tried to explain why he decided to cut all ties with Althoff, saying that she made him feel like his interview was the source of all the problems in her life at the time. “What I’m really trying to say is I feel like I’m not necessarily a part of the problem,” Drake told Bobbi as he attempted to articulate why he blocked her on everything and asked for the original video to be taken down. “And I experience a lot of guilt-tripping in my life where people are like, ‘No, this is your fault,’ essentially and my intentions are pure.” Adding, “It’s the same way even in music,” people will be like, ‘Oh, you’re a culture vulture,’ or people will describe the collaborative efforts that I’ve put forth and the artists that I’ve picked up and lifted up or shined a light on as me taking, you know? They’ll put a negative spin on it and try and tell me that it’s a self-serving thing or whatever, and I think I get really sensitive about that.” Drake’s collabs with up-and-coming artists have been the subject of much debate in rap social media circles for years and the issue was addressed by Kendrick Lamar multiple times during their back-and-forth last summer on “euphoria” and “Not Like Us.” And the Compton rapper hasn’t been the only one to be critical of his collabs. Back in 2019, Drake addressed Grime rapper Wiley‘s criticism while co-hosting the 1Xtra Rap Show with Tiffany Calver. “I hate that people think that me being into music from these kids that are trying to make it and trying to build a name for themselves is like, ‘Oh, that’s some culture vulture,” he told Calver. “What does that even mean? I don’t understand what that means. Would you rather me not acknowledge anything or support? That’s some real confused hater s—t. But it is what it is. I see it a lot. I’ll never understand how supporting somebody’s song or even going a step further, giving somebody a song or linking up, I’ll never understand how that is not viewed as something admirable. But I guess some people have their own outlook on it.” You can watch the full conversation below. Get weekly rundowns straight to your inbox Sign Up Source link
