Duane ‘Keefe D’ Davis Murder Charge for 2Pac’s Death Upheld in Court

Duane “Keefe D” Davis will not have his murder charge dismissed for his alleged role in the September 1996 shooting death of Tupac Shakur. Per the Associated Press, Clark County District Court Judge Carli Kierny ruled on Tuesday (Jan. 21) that Davis’ murder charge will stand as he hasn’t shown any proof of immunity in regard to deals he struck with federal or local law enforcement authorities in California. Davis’ attorney, Carl Arnold, is mulling a decision to exercise their option to appeal the decision to the state’s Supreme Court. Arnold reportedly called Davis’ indictment an “egregious” violation of his client’s rights due to the 27-year layoff between 2Pac’s murder and the charges. Prosecutors believe they have a strong case against Davis, who wrote about being present for the rap legend’s murder in his 2019 tell-all memoir. Shakur was shot on Sept. 7, 1996 in a drive-by shooting which authorities believe Davis orchestrated with others in the car following a brawl at the MGM Grand casino in Las Vegas. Pac and Davis’ nephew Orlando Anderson got into a heated argument on the casino floor after Mike Tyson’s first-round knockout of Bruce Seldon. Nearly three decades later, Davis was arrested in September 2023 and charged with one count of murder with a deadly weapon in connection to the Las Vegas shooting of Tupac Shakur. The Death Row rapper ultimately succumbed to his injuries six days later on Sept. 13, 1996. Davis was ready to post bail and move to house arrest conditions last June, but Judge Kierny had concerns over the legitimacy of the $750,000 in funds. He’s since been denied bail and Davis’ trial is set to begin in March. Source link

Musicians Who Have Donated to LA Wildfire Relief Efforts: List

As the Los Angeles wildfires continue to devastate the city, celebrities are coming together to support the wildfire relief efforts that have been working tirelessly to help the community rebuild and gather resources for victims. At the time of publication, the Palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres and is only 19% contained, while the east-side Eaton fires are 45% contained at 14,000 acres. In the past week, the fires have caused 24 deaths, nearly 100,000 people under evacuation orders, and more than 12,000 structures destroyed. The tragedy has killed 25 people to date. As a result, number of stars are using their platforms and net worth to support give back and donate to the community, including everyone from Beyoncé and Doja Cat to Metallica and more. Entertainment industry figures have spoken about the loss of their homes — including Mandy Moore, Paris Hilton, Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, Jhené Aiko, Paris Hilton, songwriter Diane Warren, The Hills stars Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag and many more — even as others step up to offer help. Additionally, resources are available for those who have lost their homes or need assistance in other ways. MusiCares and the Recording Academy have launched the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort to support music professionals impacted by the crisis, making a combined pledge of $1 million to kick off the efforts. People who have worked in the music industry for more than five years may qualify for immediate assistance, including up to $1,500 in financial aid and $500 in food vouchers. See below for our updating list on musicians who are donating to wildfire relief efforts. Beyoncé Beyoncé‘s BeyGood Foundation pledged $2.5 million to assist families in recovery. In an Instagram post, the foundation announced the pledge to the L.A. Fire Relief Fund aimed at helping impacted Los Angelenos in the midst of one of the most destructive wildfires in the state’s history. “The fund is earmarked to aid families in the Altadena/Pasadena area who lost their homes, and to churches and community centers to address the immediate needs of those affected by the wildfires,” read the post, which encouraged followers to show their support for the impacted families by visiting the organization’s website. Doja Cat Doja — who was born and raised in the L.A. area — shared on Instagram that she has partnered with the American Red Cross to specially design a line of merchandise benefitting the charity organization’s relief efforts in California. “Please help me and @americanredcross support my beautiful state of California,” Doja wrote, captioning photos of some of the pieces. “100% of proceeds go to American Red Cross to support the people of California affected by the wildfires.” The clothing pieces are available for purchase now online. Ice Nine The Boston-bred group announced over the weekend the launch of a fundraiser they’ve dubbed “Heed the Call For California,” with 100% of the proceeds going to the California Fire Foundation Wildlife & Disaster Relief Fund, which will directly support victims across the state. The black T-shirt features an image of the masked character Ghostface from the Scream movie series dressed as a California firefighter holding an axe, with the band’s name in white behind him amid a palm tree sunset and the effort’s moniker in red horror script below. You can pre-order the $45 shirt here, with orders expected to ship in late February. Maná Metallica The band’s philanthropic foundation, All Within My Hands, is granting $500,000 to relief efforts carried out by the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Recovery Fund and the Pasadena Community Foundation’s Eaton Canyon Fire Relief and Recovery Fund, per a press release. The foundation “dedicates itself to creating sustainable communities by supporting workforce education, the fight against hunger, and other critical local services,” says its website. Paris Hilton Hilton launched an emergency fund through her nonprofit 11:11 Media Impact to support families who have lost their homes in the fires. “My heart is with everyone impacted by the devastating fires here in LA,” Hilton wrote on Instagram. “While I’ve lost my Malibu home, my thoughts are with the countless families who have lost so much more — their homes, cherished keepsakes, the communities they loved, and their sense of stability.” The singer and entrepreneur added, “As a mom, I can’t imagine the pain and fear of not having a safe place for your babies.” She added that she is contributing $100,000 to the fund and will match additional donations up to $100,000. “I’m asking others to join me in doing our part to support these families,” she wrote. Taylor Swift The “Anti-Hero” singer announced on Jan. 16 that she had donated to multiple charities that are aiding those impacted by the wildfires. “The fires in California have devastated so many families, and it’s been heartbreaking to see these stories unfold,” she wrote in her announcement posted to her Instagram Stories.” The Eagles The Eagles have pledged $2.5 million to FireAid, the Jan. 30 benefit concert for Los Angeles fire victims to be held at Intuit Dome. The event, billed as “an evening of music and solidarity” and produced by the Irving Azoff family alongside usual competitors Live Nation and AEG Presents, will donate proceeds toward an organization created to rebuild Los Angeles infrastructure, as well as support displaced families and advance fire prevention technologies and strategies. The Weeknd The musician announced on Jan. 17 that he donated $1 million to help with wildfire relief efforts via Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, GoFundMe’s Wildfire Relief Fund and Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Travis Scott Scott’s new song “4×4” will be accompanied by a philanthropic initiative. Scott announced that 100% of the net proceeds from special merchandise—a shirt and zip hoodie honoring Los Angeles’ first responders—will benefit Direct Relief’s California Wildfire Response Fund. Billy Ray Cyrus Speaks Out After Messy Inauguration Ball Performance

Technical issued led to a haphazard Billy Ray Cyrus performance at the Liberty Ball during Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration and on Tuesday (Jan. 21), the star responded to critics. “I wouldn’t have missed the honor of playing this event whether my microphone, guitar and monitors worked or not. I was there because President Donald J. Trump invited me,” Cyrus told People in a statement after the performance. “I had a ball at the Liberty Ball last night and I’ve learned through all these years when the producer says, ‘You’re on,’ you go entertain the folks even if the equipment goes to hell. I was there for the people and we had a blast. That’s called rock n roll!!!” In video of the Jan. 20 performance, Cyrus began strumming his electric guitar after playing the video intro to Lil Nas X’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Old Town Road” on the screen behind him. He appeared confused as attempted to play guitar and sing along, with both ending up inaudible. After singing the song a cappella, Cyrus tried to get the audience to clap along, explaining, “they told me to kill as much time as possible.” As the silence continued, he asked the crowd, “Do y’all want me to sing more or do you just want me to get the hell off the stage? I don’t give a damn.” He then asked, “Is my guitar still on? I think they cut me off. I don’t hear my guitar anymore.” Looking around for help, while saying “check” into his mic, Cyrus said, “Is anybody awake? I don’t hear it. Do y’all hear this? Where’s everybody at? Check. Is anyone back there? Can someone turn my guitar back on? We gonna sing a little bit more.” A guitar tech then unsuccessfully tried to fix the technical issue, before Cyrus asked his fans to “just snap your fingers” as he sang a portion of “Achy Breaky Heart” a cappella before leaving the stage.  Source link

Miranda Lambert Teams With Guitar Shop to Help L.A. Animal Shelters

Three-time Grammy-winning country singer-songwriter Miranda Lambert‘s MuttNation Foundation is helping to bring aid to animal shelters in California. Those shelters are among the many infrastructures impacted by the widespread damage in parts of greater Los Angeles since a series of wildfires began in Los Angeles County in early January, impacting thousands of acres of land, homes and businesses. Lambert’s MuttNation Foundation has teamed with guitar dealer Norm Harris of Norman’s Rare Guitars to help animal shelters in the Los Angeles area. Harris and a close friend have each donated a Gibson R9 1959 Les Paul Reissue Custom Shop Murphy Lab guitar to an online auction to benefit animals. The auction is now ongoing through Saturday, Jan. 25, at 5 p.m. CT, with 100 percent of the funds raised from the auction going to benefit Los Angeles-area animal shelters. “The fires have displaced so many people and animals, and I wanted to do something that would immediately help the overcrowded animal shelters,” Harris said in a statement. “When my friend said he wanted to buy one of these guitars — but that he didn’t want the guitar — he wanted to auction it and have the funds go support animals, I jumped right in and said I’d donate one, too. These are two incredibly special guitars, each with a slightly different finish that I hand-selected. The guitars have a value of over $8,000 each, but this is for charity, so I hope people will be generous.” “Although I haven’t met Norm, I’ve heard about him and his guitar store for years and the next time I’m in L.A., it will be my first stop,” Lambert said in a statement. “There’s nothing better than finding another like-minded music and mutt-loving person and I’m really honored that he chose to partner with MuttNation.” Harris, known for his deep and expansive knowledge of guitars, was spotlighted in the Netflix documentary Norman’s Rare Guitars, and has authored two books about vintage guitars. Norman’s Rare Guitars was established in 1975 and became a mainstay in the Los Angeles community, drawing artists and musicians to the store to shop for vintage instruments and accessories. The MuttNation Foundation was founded by Lambert and her mother Bev in 2009 and has since raised over $10 million to support its mission to promote the adoption of shelter pets, advance spay and neuter and education the public regarding the benefits of these actions. Alissia Talks Producer of the Year Grammy Nomination

The first week of last November was bittersweet for funk instrumentalist and producer Alissia. On Sunday, Nov. 3, Quincy Jones passed away at age 91, and his life’s work of producing ingenious and timeless music made him one of Alissia’s biggest musical inspirations. But on Friday, Nov. 8, the Recording Academy announced the 2025 Grammy nominations, and Alissia became the ninth woman in the show’s 67-year history to be up for producer of the year, non-classical.   She’s in great company: Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Sheryl Crow and Lauryn Hill are a handful of the other women who’ve been up for the honor, which has never been won by a woman before. And her competition this year includes fellow first-time nominees Mustard and Ian Fitchuk, while D’Mile is nominated for a third consecutive year and Daniel Nigro for a second. Alissia’s credits during this eligibility period include tracks by Rae Khalil, BJ the Chicago Kid, Jamila Woods and Lion Babe. She also worked on the Anderson .Paak and SiR-assisted “Do 2 Me” from Kaytranada’s Timeless album, which is nominated for best dance/electronic album, as well as “MoreOfIt” from NxWorries’ Why Lawd?, which is up for best progressive R&B album. “This nomination is so inspiring,” she tells Billboard. “I’ve been dedicating my whole life to music for 14 years. I’ve been working behind the scenes. Sometimes, it can be hard to keep going because this industry is not the easiest. You face a lot of challenges [like] stepping into rooms where I’m the only woman in that room. It took a long time for me to gain that respect.” The Swiss-born, Italian-raised musician (real name Alissia Benveniste) has remained dedicated to reviving ‘70s funk for over a decade. She moved to the United States when she was 18 to study at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, and HuffPost touted the budding bassist as “the future face of funk music.” She fronted her own band, Alissia and the Funkateers, and dropped her 2016 EP Back to the Funkture, which she’s since removed from the internet to make way for her proper debut project. Over the years, Alissia has worked with Bootsy Collins – co-writing a third of his 2017 album World Wide Funk album – Calvin Harris, Mark Ronson, Nile Rodgers and many more. She earned her first Grammy nomination – for album of the year, no less – with the deluxe edition of Mary J. Blige’s Good Morning Gorgeous after earning writing and production credits on the track “Love Without the Heartbreak.” Now with her own major Grammy nod, Alissia will continue to make a name for herself by releasing her first full-length album later this year. “People like Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX – they’ve worked for years and years and years, and now they’re having their moment. I’m loving that for these boss ladies,” she says. “I see a lot of DMs from young girls or women who are like, ‘I’m giving up. This industry is so hard to navigate.’ We really have to empower each other.”  Billboard chatted with Alissia about her historic Grammy nomination, upcoming debut album, Prince’s Twitter DM about her cover of The Times and Bootsy Collins’ advice from their “life-changing” sessions. What kind of music did you grow up listening to, and how does that inform the music you currently make? My mom always had music playing around the house – lots of Motown stuff, Stevie [Wonder,] Earth, Wind & Fire. The moment I really, really clicked with music and was like “OK, that’s what I wanna do” is [when] I was in high school and I was heavily listening to Prince, Michael [Jackson]. Then when I moved to Boston, that’s when I really dove into all the ‘70s stuff, like funk soul, James Brown, P-Funk, The Brothers Johnson and Stevie again, but hearing it from a musician’s perspective. I feel like the love kept growing and growing, and it’s really what made me want to pick up the bass. I was like, “Oh, I want to play these basslines I’m hearing on all this Bootsy stuff and funk records.” What was the first song you learned to play on bass? “Good Times” by CHIC, but at the same time, it was also “The Payback” by James Brown. Those were the first two basslines, I kept going back and forth. It’s crazy because a year later, I’m in front of Bootsy Collins and Nile Rodgers, and they’re breaking down how they came up with it.  What instruments do you play? I can get around on pretty much everything. Bass was my main instrument for a long time. People don’t even know I started on piano ‘cause I’m not prolific now, but keys is a safe space for me. I know how to edit myself on drums and guitar, I can get around synths. Around that same time I was digging into all those records, I was really inspired by what I was hearing and learning all the parts. How did you become so fascinated by the ‘70s era of music, considering you’re not a ‘70s baby? The richness of the music. A lot of times, I would go into sessions and people would be referencing songs from that era, [so] it made me dig deeper and deeper. The musicianship of it and the production is so outstanding. And it’s timeless. One of my favorite albums from Michael, Thriller, came out 40-plus years ago, and we still listen to that album nowadays to reference or take inspiration from. And that’s something I always try to aim for – making timeless music that 40 years from now, people would still listen to it. One thing Bootsy told me, and I really, really keep it close to my heart now, is: Don’t follow the trend, set the trend. Prince reached out to you after he saw your YouTube cover of one of The Time’s songs. Which song did you perform, and what did he have

Addison Rae Says Charli XCX Is a ‘Big Sister & Mentor for Me’

Addison Rae is one of the few influencers who is successfully transitioning into a pop career, and in a new Rolling Stone cover story, the 24-year old star opened up about how her friend Charli XCX has been an inspiration to her along the journey. Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news “[Meeting] Charli XCX was an obviously pivotal moment in my life,” Rae told the publication. “She has been such a big sister and mentor for me.” Charli, meanwhile, called Rae a “f—ing genius,” adding, “It’s been fun to watch her evolve. Everything she does relates back to her art — every item of clothing she wears, everything she says in a red-carpet interview, everything she tweets — it all is a part of the world-building.” The duo, who previously collaborated on Rae’s “2 Die 4” and the updated “Von Dutch” from Charli’s Brat remix album, also reflected on their years of working together. Charli recalled a time that Rae “burst into the room in Ugg boots and hot pants after parking her pink Tesla in the driveway and exclaimed, ‘Boys are stupid!’ and then immediately was like, ‘Wait, we should write a song about that!’” She added, “I know that sounds simple and maybe silly to some people, but to me that was such a sign of instinct and fearlessness.”  “[Charli] respected me and my ideas,” Rae said. “It was the first time I really took the step on my own to be confident in the ideas I had and follow that. I owe that all to Charli.” Rae has yet to release her debut album, but has already released two songs teasing her upcoming musical era: “Aquamarine” and her first Hot 100 hit, “Diet Pepsi.” Source link

Every Non-English Song That Reached the Hot 100 Top 10

Non-English-language music has a long history on Billboard’s charts. While, naturally, the U.S.-centered Billboard Hot 100 chart mostly contains songs recorded in English, occasionally an international hit will become an inescapable global sensation, dominating the conversation, and streaming and radio airwaves — think Los Del Rio’s 1996 14-week No. 1 hit “Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)” (recorded in Spanish) or PSY’s viral “Gangham Style” in 2012 (Korean). In total, 39 songs recorded either entirely or mostly in a non-English language have reached the top 10 of the Hot 100 in the chart’s 67-year history (through the chart dated Jan. 25, 2025). The first was Domenico Modugno’s Italian hit “Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)” in the chart’s inaugural year, 1958. The song spent five total weeks at No. 1 before winning both record of the year and song of the year at the first annual Grammy Awards in 1959. Of the 39 non-English-language top 10 hits, 23 are in Spanish, the most of any language. Korean is the second most (with eight), followed by German (three), French and Italian (two each) and Japanese (one). Bad Bunny has earned the most non-English-language Hot 100 top 10s, with 13 total — he’s earned two additional top 10s in his career, with “I Like It” with Cardi B and J Balvin, and “K-Pop” with Travis Scott and The Weeknd, but those are primarily in English. Four of those 10 Spanish songs are from his 2022 album Un Verano Sin Ti, which spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the longest leading non-English-language album in history. BTS has the second-most non-English Hot 100 top 10s, with five, followed by PSY (two). Ten of the 36 songs have reached No. 1 on the Hot 100, including Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” featuring Justin Bieber, which spent a then-record-tying 16 weeks at No. 1 in 2017. The most recent No. 1 is Jimin’s “Like Crazy,” which is primarily in Korean but also contains English, in April 2023. International hits have become much more common on the Hot 100 in recent years. Twenty-seven of the 39 top 10s have reached the tier since 2012, following a 16-year break between “Macarena” and “Gangnam Style.” The influx coincides with music’s increased globalization, highlighted by hits from Bad Bunny and BTS, among others. Seven non-English-language songs reached the top 10 in the 2023 alone, the most ever in a calendar year. 2022 previously had the most, with four, after three reached the region in both 2019 and 2020. Three have already reached the top 10 in 2025 thanks to hits from Bad Bunny’s Debí Tirar Más Fotos. 2023 was a particularly historic specifically for regional Mexican music. After Gera MX and Christian Nodal’s “Botella Tras Botella” became the first song in the genre to debut on the Hot 100 in 2021, the genre achieved its first top 10 in April 2023 with Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola.” It later became the first top five hit too, peaking at No. 4. Further, Shakira became the first solo woman in history to score a Spanish-language top 10 on the Hot 100, thanks to her collaboration with Bizarrap in January 2023, “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.” She returned to the region two months later with her Spanish collab with Karol G, “TQG” (No. 7 peak). In chronological order of their peak dates, here are all 39 non-English-language songs to reach the Hot 100’s top 10 in history. Note that the list does not include songs with relatively minimal portions in other languages, such as Enrique Iglesias’ “Bailamos” or Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin’s “I Like It.” Paul Haney from Joel Whitburn’s Record Research contributed research assistance to this report.
