Jason Aldean Covers Luke Bryan Song to Honor Charlie Kirk

Jason Aldean and his wife, Brittany, shared a video of themselves covering a Luke Bryan hit to honor late conservative political activist Charlie Kirk. The brief video clip, captioned “For Charlie” and including a heart emoji, features the Aldeans singing Bryan’s somber 2014 hit “Drink a Beer,” with the musician also accompanying on acoustic guitar. “Funny how the good ones go/ Too soon, but the good Lord knows/ The reasons why I guess,” Aldean sings as his wife joins in. “Drink a Beer” was written by Brett Beavers and Chris Stapleton, and spent two weeks atop Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart in 2014. The video also shows a photo of the Aldeans attending the memorial service held for the polarizing conservative activist on Sept. 21 in Glendale, Ariz. The event featured performances from Christian music artists including Chris Tomlin, Brandon Lake and Phil Wickham, and featured speakers including President Donald Trump and Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk. Charlie Kirk, the founder of youth conservative organization Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on Sept. 10 during a question-and-answer session held at Utah Valley University as part of his group’s The American Comeback Tour. The suspect in the murder, Tyler Robinson, turned himself in to law enforcement about 33 hours after the shooting. He has been charged with aggravated murder and more; prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Shortly after Kirk’s death, Jason Aldean shared a photo on social media of the couple with Kirk, praising him and sending prayers to his family in the caption. Kanye West’s ‘In Whose Name’ Documentary: 7 Standout Moments

At just 18 years old, aspiring filmmaker Nico Ballesteros was given the opportunity to follow one of the most famous people in the world in Ye (formerly Kanye West). Ballesteros whittled 3,000 hours of footage from about 2018 to 2024 in West’s pocket to a two-hour documentary, In Whose Name?, which is a raw, unflinching look behind the curtain of one of music’s most mercurial, brilliant, polarizing and chaotic acts. The documentary arrived in about 1,000 theaters across the U.S. on Friday (Sept. 19). There’s no shortage of cameos, with appearances from Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, LeBron James, Drake, Chris Rock, Diddy, Rihanna, Elon Musk, Pharrell, Swizz Beatz, Charlie Kirk and Candace Owens, Anna Wintour, Virgil Abloh, Playboi Carti, Marilyn Manson and Justin Bieber. In Whose Name is spread out through a prelude — which calls back to super rare archival footage from the 2000s — and three acts, along with a brief epilogue. It’s not meant to paint West in a particular positive or negative light, but more to provide context and a look inside his last six years of turbulence. “We don’t know if we glued together the story,” West says in the doc. “If you’re documenting every almost waking moment and sometimes sleeping moments of my life, and you don’t understand the throughline, then the world’s not going to understand the throughline. It’s just going to look crazy, or it’s going to be one antic to the next antic, the way the media words it.” Ballesteros called the documentary “a revolving door of idolatry.” “I think that’s why I created this project, to understand the human beneath the idol,” the director added to NPR. Fans have been asking themselves “Why, Ye?” plenty of times over the years, and the doc provides some answers as to his thinking when it comes to some of his controversial decision-making — the good, the bad and the ugly. In Whose Name? doesn’t have a major plot line or theme surrounding West as the only thing linear really is the timeline following him, but it’s a worthwhile watch for anyone who is (or was) a fan of the 21-time Grammy Award winner. Here are seven standout moments from In Whose Name. Lady Gaga & LeBron James appear in unearthed archival footage Even the most diehard Ye fans are going to be impressed with the rare archival footage unearthed from the 2000s for the Prelude. Lady Gaga makes a cameo as she’s deep in the planning stages of her Fame Kills tour with West, which was cancelled in 2009 following Ye’s infamous stage interruption of Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards. LeBron James and Ye tag-teamed a September 2007 episode of SNL, with the hooper playing host for the evening and West on performer duties, which came in the midst of the duo’s rise in each’s respective crafts, looking to snatch the crown. James even called Ye the “No. 1 man in the world right now,” as the rapper came off the release of Graduation weeks earlier, while LeBron made his first NBA Finals appearance that June. Ye explains to Playboi Carti why he removed Pusha T from ‘Off the Grid’: ‘Black Lives Matter is worse than the devil’ Pusha T originally had a verse on a reference track to what became “Off the Grid.” While Ye was recording Donda in the Atlanta Falcons’ locker room, Playboi Carti asked him why West didn’t like Pusha’s verse. “I’d rather y’all be like, I’m killing 20 n—s, I’m f—ing this many b—s, I’m doing all this s—t, than y’all saying Black Lives Matter s—t on my s—t,” Ye responded. “Black Lives Matter is like worse than the devil to me, it’s mind control.” Michael Che confronts Ye backstage after 2018 ‘Saturday Night Live’ West made an explosive appearance donning a red MAGA hat on Saturday Night Live in September 2018 in support of his never-released YANDHI album. During his infamous pro-Trump rant to close the show, he called out a certain comic on SNL for talking about Bill Cosby, and that happened to be cast member Michael Che. “You can’t be controlled by monolithic thoughts,” Ye said. “You can’t always have, every time you have a Black subject matter, like [Bill] Cosby, that you have to have a Black comedian talking about him.” Che took issue with West’s comments and confronted him backstage following the show. “I work here. Like, come on, man. We treat everyone that come in like family, and you gonna sell us out? Like, that’s f—ked up, man,” he said. “We look up to you, we love you. What you got against us?” Che continued to berate West: “But airing it out like that without letting us be able to reply is kind of foul. You wait until the last song and then say that foul s–t to us?… You’re a hero to us, man! We love you. Seriously, we love you. But it’s foul to do that.” A studio session with Drake & Lil Dicky Drake pulled up to a Ye studio session circa early 2018, and it’s a sight to behold, with Lil Dicky also present. West kicks a freestyle that impresses the 6 God. “That verse is crazy,” the OVO rapper responded, giving Ye his props. The clip appears to be from the unreleased 500 Days in UCLA documentary that was never released by West’s camp. Months later, Kanye’s relationship with Drake soured following a Wyoming trip, which led to Pusha T’s battle with Drizzy. Ye’s deteriorating marriage to Kim Kardashian The splintering of Kanye’s marriage to Kim Kardashian is apparent throughout the documentary. In 2018, it appears their union really fractured: Following West’s explosive appearance on SNL and controversial visit to the Oval Office, a weeping Kardashian attempts to plead with Ye over the phone. “You’re losing everyone around you,” she claims. “It’s a bad dream… One day you’re going to wake up and have nothing.” Ye wasn’t having any of it. “Never put that

Louis Tomlinson Gives Taste of Sweet New ‘Lemonade’ Single

Louis Tomlinson is feeling sweet, but also a bit bitter. The former One Direction singer appeared to crank up the promo machine for his as-yet-untitled third solo album another notch on Tuesday (Sept. 23) when he dropped a 15-second teaser for the upcoming single “Lemonade.” Explore See latest videos, charts and news The song, due out on Tuesday (Sept. 30), is a soaring pop balloon, with Tomlinson singing, “She’s so bitter, she’s so sweet/ Lemonade, lemonade/ A little taste is all I need/ Lemonade,” over driving drums and a joyful arrangement. The accompanying peek at what looks like the music video, finds Tomlinson — his hair buzzed on the sides and grown out and shaggy on top —  hanging out in a field in front of a towering stack of speakers and a rusted-out old car. The singer has been busy lately teasing the follow-up to his 2022 sophomore LP, Faith in the Future, telling fans earlier this month that the untitled album is nearly complete. “Just sat listening to the new record and I’ve got a really really good feeling this time around!” he wrote on X at the time. “Can’t wait for you all to hear it!!” Faith in the Future featured the singles “Bigger Than Me,” “Out of My System” and “Silver Tongues,” and debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 album chart, while giving Tomlinson his first No. 1 on the UK albums chart. At press time no title or release date have been announced for Tomlinson’s third LP, though he has some upcoming gigs where fans are hoping he’ll debut other new songs. In fact, when one commenter expressed frustration at the lack of information on the album earlier this month, Tomlinson teased, “or maybe I’m going to play something new at away from home,” following up with, “it’s about time isn’t it” and “Really really excited about it! Got a few surprises. Should be fun.” Tomlinson will be among the headliners at the upcoming New York edition of his Away From Home Festival (Oct. 4-5) at Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, where he’ll appear alongside his personally curated list of fellow performers, including Lauv, Steve Aoki, Plain White T’s, Daya, Circa Waves, Pale Waves and others. He will also take part in BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge Month on Oct. 29, where guests typically perform one of their own songs as well as a cover song. Check out the “Lemonade” preview clip below. Rolling Stones Prepping ‘Black and Blue’ Super Deluxe Box of 1976 LP

The Rolling Stones are going back to the vault for a refresh of their landmark 13th studio album, Black and Blue. The group will celebrate the 1976 LP with an upcoming definitive Super Deluxe box set due out on Nov. 14 through Interscope/UMe featuring five previously unreleased songs. Explore See latest videos, charts and news The set, remixed and expanded across multiple formats, will include a 5LP vinyl box set as well as a 4-CD box set, with both including a Blu-ray disc, replica tour poster and 100-page hardback book with a new essay by Stones expert Paul Sexton and exclusive photos from the album session and tour. A limited-edition vinyl version will be pressed on black and blue marbled vinyl, alongside streamlined two-disc and one-disc formats on CD and vinyl. Black and Blue marked a turning point for the band following the departure of former guitarist Mick Taylor, who was eventually replaced by Ronnie Wood. As the band searched for Taylor’s replacement, they brought a series of guitar greats in to perform on the LP, including Canned Heat guitarist Harvey Mandel, songwriter and session great Wayne Perkins, as well as Yardbirds wiz Jeff Beck and Memphis blues guitarist Robert A. Johnson. Wood would later join the band full-time, appearing on three tracks on the Billboard 200 album chart-topping LP, which mixes reggae, funk and soul into the Stones’ signature mix on songs including “Hot Stuff,” “Fool to Cry,” “Memory Motel” and “Melody.” The box set will feature a six-track disc of previously unreleased songs, including Mick Jagger/Keith Richards composition “I Love Ladies,” a cover of Shirley & Company’s “Shame, Shame, Shame” and four instrumental jams from the 1975 sessions with the guest guitarists; a new video for “Shame, Shame, Shame” will debut on Thursday (Sept. 25) directed by Dutch filmmaker Camille Boumans. The box will include a full live concert from the band’s six-night residency at London’s Earls Court Exhibition Centre. The accompanying Blu-ray disc adds a previously unreleased TV broadcast of the Stones’ 1976 show at Les Abattoirs in Paris, as well as Dolby Atmos surround sound mixes of the studio album and the live Earls Court concert. Producer Andrew Watt recently told Rolling Stone magazine that he’s working with the Stones again on what could be the follow-up to their Grammy-winning 24th studio album, 2023’s Hackney Diamonds. Without revealing many details, Watt said, “I’ve said it before, but it’s like working for Batman…when the tongue is up in the air, you just go… I can say we did some recording together, but that’s all I can say.” Listen to “Shame, Shame, Shame,” watch the Black and Blue remaster trailer and see the full track listing for the Super Deluxe 4CD + Blu-ray version below. Oasis Release ‘Morning Glory (Unplugged)’ From 30th Anniversary Edition

For a band that has not released a proper new song in 16 years, any fresh Oasis content is like manna from heaven for the band’s die-hard fans. Especially if it’s a refresh of one of their all-time classics. On Wednesday morning (Sept. 24) the reunited Britpop icons dropped “Morning Glory (Unplugged),” a thrilling, stripped-down version of the title track from their 1995 sophomore album, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? The song, which appears on the upcoming (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? 30th anniversary deluxe edition (Oct. 3), was produced and mixed by guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher and Callum Marinho from the original master recordings at Noel’s London studio, Lone Star Sound. The acoustic guitar and tambourine jam puts the focus directly on singer Liam Gallagher’s urgent vocals until a mid-song piano break that adds a jazzy interlude to the otherwise driving, stripped-down arrangement. At press time no information was available on when the unplugged version was recorded or who performs on it. In addition to the title track refresh, the 30th anniversary Morning Glory edition will feature unplugged versions of four other classics from the album, including “Cast No Shadow,” “Wonderwall,” “Champagne Supernova” and the previously released live favorite B-side “Acquiesce.” After a triumphant North American swing, Oasis will continue their sold-out reunion tour at London’s Wembley Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 27) and Sunday (Sept. 28), returning to the famed venue where they played to more than 400,000 over a five-night stand in July and early August. The tour will then move on to a series of shows in South Korea and Japan in late October before a run of five concerts in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia and a wind-down series of November gigs in Buenos Aires, Argentina and São Paulo, Brazil. Sarah McLachlan Performs ‘Better Broken’ on Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Live!’ Return

Sarah McLachlan was the musical guest on Tuesday night’s (Sept. 23) very special episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! The late-night talk show returned to the airwaves a week after ABC pulled the plug following criticism of Kimmel’s comments on the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk from the leader of the Federal Communications Commission and Donald Trump. McLachlan was on song as she performed “Better Broken,” the title track from the three-time Grammy Award-winning Canadian artist’s first studio album in more than a decade. Seated at a grand piano with dramatic mood lighting giving the set an ethereal glow, McLachlan sang, “Maybe if I catch my breath/ Maybe if I wait a little/ I’d remember how it hurts/ And stop before I fall/ I’d forget to come apart/ And catch myself and hold on tightly.” The emotional ballad about accepting romantic heartbreak in which she pledges to “forgive, but not forget,” was pitch perfect for an emotional evening in which Kimmel was frequently near tears during his monologue, in which he described his tumultuous week and the fall-out from his Kirk jokes. McLachlan — who is doing the promo rounds for her equally moving ABC News doc Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery — was also a fitting choice because over the weekend the singer appeared to make a gesture of solidarity with Kimmel by refusing to perform at the doc’s premiere. “I’ve grappled with being here tonight and around what to say about the present situation that we are all faced with,” she said in a statement at the premiere. “The stark contraction to the many advances we’ve made watching the insidious erosion of women’s rights, of trans and queer rights, the muzzling of free speech.” “So happy that Jimmy Kimmel is back on the air and even happier to be performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live TONIGHT!,” McLachlan wrote in a social post before her appearance.   Due out Friday, Sept. 19 through Concord Records, Better Broken has been described as “a soul-searching reflection on the fortitude that comes from weathering life’s constant storms.” Primarily recorded at the legendary Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, the Halifax native enlisted help from esteemed musicians including drummer Matt Chamberlain (Bob Dylan, David Bowie) and pedal-steel guitarist Greg Leisz (Kacey Musgraves, Florence + the Machine) and expanded her creative circle by collaborating with producers Tony Berg and Will Maclellan, both known for their work with the indie pop super-trio boygenius. Minnie Riperton 50th anniversary tribute at Hollywood Bowl

Before gifted singers-songwriters such as Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande, SZA and Lalah Hathaway were murmurs in anyone’s ears, there was Minnie Riperton. Graced with an extraordinary five-and-a-half-octave vocal range, including the whistle register — the highest for a human voice — the Chicago native and her musical legacy are the focus of a special tribute taking place at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Wednesday evening (Sept. 24) that now boasts the just-announced addition of Stevie Wonder. Explore See latest videos, charts and news “Perfect Angel: The Definitive Minnie Riperton Tribute” salutes the 50th anniversary of Riperton’s same-titled 1974 major-label album debut as well as encompass the expansive, multi-genre scope of a colorful career tragically cut short when she died of breast cancer at age 31 in 1979. Aside from Wonder, the performers  reimagining memorable songs from her deep-rooted repertoire of soul, pop, rock and points in between — including her iconic Hot 100 No. 1 “Lovin’ You,” which spotlights her mesmerizing whistle tone — will be Wonder (just announced Tuesday), George Benson, Chanté Moore, Alex Isley, Aloe Blacc, säje and Lizz Wright, among other surprise guests. “The artists I’ve assembled for Minnie’s tribute represent a hybrid of artistry that speaks to the diversity of who her music touched,” says tribute producer Robin Burgess. “They’re a troupe of her admirers, collaborators and enthusiasts like myself who view her talent as a champion of multiple genres. From a cappella groups to chanteuses as well as instrumentalists from folk, jazz and R&B, I tried to assemble an ensemble that would come to Minnie’s music offering honest reflections as well as some surprise interpretations laced in between.” Burgess also notes the performances will be interwoven with stunning images of Riperton created by sculptor and immersive artist Andrew F. Scott. Proof of Riperton’s enduring appeal and influence 50 years later can be heard on covers of Perfect Angel’s gold-certified single “Lovin’ You” done by Grande, SZA, Shanice and Chloe. Her work has also been sampled by hip-hop acts such as The Roots, Q-Tip and Arrested Development. Additional Riperton stand-outs from her catalog of six studio albums include “Inside My Love,” “Memory Lane,” “Lover and Friend” and “Here We Go.” Prior to releasing her first solo album, 1970’s Come to My Garden, Riperton sang in girl group The Gems, worked with Chess Records doing backing vocals for  the likes of Etta James, Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters and then became lead singer for psychedelic-soul band Rotary Connection. From there, Riperton signed with Epic Records and released 1974’s gold-certified Perfect Angel. Wonder, an early co-signer of Riperton’s talent, co-produced Perfect Angel (under the pseudonym El Toro Negro) and penned the title track. And Riperton would later sing background on two classic Wonder albums: Fulfillingness’ First Finale (“Creepin’,” “It Ain’t No Use”) and Songs in the Key of Life (“Ordinary Pain”). “Minnie was my dear friend,” said Wonder in an earlier announcement about the Hollywood Bowl tribute. “She was an extraordinary, vibrant person with an extra-special voice.  I was a big fan of hers before we met and it was my honor to produce the album … Minnie had a positive energy that radiated throughout these sessions and throughout the rest of her life.  When Minnie lived, she lived.” Also a co-producer on Perfect Angel alongside Wonder was Riperton’s husband, songwriter-producer Richard Rudolph — who’s also the father of their daughter, actress-comedian Maya Rudolph. During a recent phone interview ahead of “Perfect Angel: The Definitive Minnie Riperton Tribute,” Richard shared some insightful takeaways with Billboard about Riperton’s music and enduring legacy: The creative rapport between him and Riperton — “I don’t know if I can put it in words, but we certainly could put it in song. Minnie was just such an incredible artist; she  was like from another planet. Our dear friend writer-producer Freddie Perren [Jackson 5, Gloria Gaynor] called her ‘bird’ because she would just open her mouth, and these beautiful melodies would come out. I’d start playing guitar, coming up with ideas and she’d just riff on them. It’s hard to remember anything coming out of her that didn’t sound beautiful. Songs that spotlight the essence of Riperton’s artistry — “’Lovin’ You,’ of course, which we always thought was special. But I think we were in Seattle on tour when we saw something so tangible happening as we started playing that song. People were putting their arms around each other; it was almost mystical the way the song was touching people in a very special way. So we came running back to the record company and said you have to put this song out. “There’s also ‘Memory Lane.’ And ‘Les Fleur,’ which Norah Jones has covered. It’s also been used in commercials for Microsoft, Nike Jordan and H&M. Another is ‘Inside My Love,’ which was banned by some radio stations in 1975 because of its [suggestive] lyrics. We were amazed to see the hypocrisy of people who were willing to turn something into something else. Minnie would tell a story during her concerts about getting a letter from a nun who told her ‘Inside’ was one of the most spiritual and beautiful songs she’d ever heard. It certainly pales in comparison to what we’re used to hearing today [laughs]. The concert will also feature Brian Wilson’s grandchildren, so it will spotlight three generations of the Wilson family. The concert, dubbed An All-Star Tribute to the Music of Brian Wilson & Songs of The Beach Boys, will feature the Folk Orchestra of Santa Barbara. Other guest performers are expected to include The Honeys; former members of The Beach Boys and the Brian Wilson Band; and keyboardist Don Randi (The Wrecking Crew); with appearances by Rosemary Butler (Jackson Browne), Ken Stacey (Elton John), Hunter Hawkins (Kenny Loggins), Carly Smithson (American Idol), Alisan Porter (The Voice) and poet Stephen J. Kalinich. These acts will be backed by The Tribe Band, who will perform an array of Beach Boys favorites. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Here’s a link for tickets. VIP packages are also available. Proceeds will be donated to Adam’s Angels, a local group of volunteers, and the Surfrider Foundation of Santa Barbara, dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans and beaches. Brian Wilson died on June 11 at age 82. He was the third member of the fabled group to pass, following brothers Dennis in 1983 at age 39 and Carl in 1998 at age 51.
