Troy Cassar-Daley Saluted With Excellence in the Community Award

Troy Cassar-Daley added to his impressive tally of accolades Tuesday night (Aug. 19) with the Excellence in the Community award, presented at Support Act’s annual Music in the House. Explore See latest videos, charts and news It was cold and wet outside, but there was no shortage of warmth inside The Linseed House, on the Grounds of Alexandria, as rock legend Jimmy Barnes, Goanna frontman Shane Howard, Slim Dusty’s daughter Anne Kirkpatrick and others paid tribute to the veteran singer. Music in the House was created in 2006 as an opportunity for the music industry charity to recognize an artist, or artists, in Australian music for their musicianship and their broader contribution to the community. Cassar-Daley was saluted not only for his outstanding, 30-plus year career, but also for his tireless community work, from mentoring emerging talent around the nation, to speaking out on men’s mental health, working in schools, championing Aboriginal culture, and much more. Kirkpatrick presented Cassar-Daley with the special honor. “It’s not just about the accolades with Troy,” she told the full house. “Troy makes connections. He’s a proud Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung man, Troy makes connections with music, connections with land and connections to people and communities right across Australia. He’s regularly gone into regional areas before a gig, without fanfare, working with schools and groups,” she added, “encouraging and promoting the power of music and sharing stories.” As he stepped up to the stage, Cassar-Daley admitted that he “did try to give this award back” and, as many close to him already know, doesn’t “like making speeches.” He mightn’t like delivering them, but when he does, he’s untouchable. The singer and songwriter spoke for 10 minutes, sharing touching memories of his extended family, friends and collaborators, many of whom were in the room. Cassar-Daley should be used to the spotlight. The Australian country great collected his sixth ARIA Award last year, winning for best country album, recognition for his 12th studio collection Between The Fires, which peaked at No. 2 on the ARIA Chart, a career-best solo chart position. Across his career, he has collected four CMAA Entertainer of the Year titles, three APRA Song of the Year Awards, nine Deadly Awards, two NIMAs, and an unprecedented 45 Golden Guitars. In 2017, he was named the 50th inductee into the Roll of Renown. The 2025 Support Act event featured live performances of Cassar-Daley’s songs by his daughter Jem Cassar-Daley, Jimmy and Mahalia Barnes, Busby Marou, and Shane Howard, with Barnes’ son David Campbell as emcee. Before belting out a rendition of “Shutting Down Our Town”, Jimmy Barnes recalled how he was “absolutely terrified” on his first experience sharing the stage with Cassar-Daley. “I’d never heard anybody with a voice that was so soulful. I fancied myself as a soul singer, until I sang with Troy. Everything he sings, it makes me want to cry. It’s just beautiful.” Jem chose the deep cut “Brighter Day,” a “song I hold very close to me,” she remarked. “Every time I hear the opening guitar riff I get goosebumps and I’m taken right back to being a kid again. Dad’s storytelling is real, raw and vivid. It’s moved and inspired me from a very young age, so performing my own version of this song means the absolute world to me.” Guests watching on included Cold Chisel guitarist and singer Ian Moss; federal Minister for the Arts Tony Burke; NSW Special Minister of State, Minister for Transport, Minister for the Arts, Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy John Graham; and Jenny McAllister, the ALP senator for the state of New South Wales and the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Earlier, Support Act CEO Clive Miller posthumously awarded Excellence In Community honors to veteran music publisher, artist and Support Act spearhead John Bromell, and to the beloved artist manager, tech production manager and industry allrounder Dominic “Mick” Mazzone. Previous recipients of the Excellence in the Community salute include Midnight Oil, Tina Arena, the late Archie Roach, Jenny Morris, Paul Kelly, Marcia Hines and last year’s winners Powderfinger. All proceeds from the event, which included a raffle, a live auction and online auction, help fund Support Act’s crisis relief and mental health programs for music workers in need. Source link

Morgan Wallen & ‘I’m The Problem’ Will Not Be Submitted for Grammys

As Morgan Wallen’s I’m the Problem sits at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for the 11th non-consecutive week, Billboard has learned that his team will not submit the album, any of the 37 songs on the voluminous set, or Wallen for consideration for the 68th Grammy Awards, to be held Feb. 1, 2026. Explore See latest videos, charts and news Hits Daily Double broke the news earlier Tuesday (Aug. 19) that the album would not be submitted, but Billboard understands that the action goes further and includes not putting Wallen forward in any category, such as best country solo performance, or any of the seven songs that he co-wrote in any song categories in any genre or general field. However, Wallen and his camp are not stopping the other songwriters from submitting their works from the album, which has already spawned four No. 1s on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart and three chart-toppers on the Hot Country Songs chart. It has also generated one No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100: Wallen’s duet with Tate McRae, “What I Want.” Wallen, whose 2021 Big Loud/Republic album Dangerous: The Double Album is Billboard‘s No. 1 album of the first 25 years of the 21st century, is removing himself from consideration from an awards body whose voters have almost totally ignored his musical contributions. The only nominations that the country superstar has received in his nearly 10-year career were for his work on Post Malone’s F1 Trillion album. Their chart-topping duet, “I Had Some Help,” received nods for best country duo/group performance and best country song for the awards presented this past February. Wallen has never received any nominations for any works from his solo albums.   As of this week, Wallen has logged 40 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — a total matched or exceeded by only eight artists in the chart’s nearly 70-year history. All eight of those artists have won multiple Grammys. Additionally, Wallen is one of only 19 artists to log 30 or more weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Wallen and The Monkees are the only artists with 30 or more weeks at No. 1 who have not won a Grammy. First-round voting for the Grammy Awards runs Oct. 3-15 with nominations due to be announced Nov. 7. Wallen’s action is extraordinarily rare, but not unprecedented among superstars. Both The Weeknd and Drake previously decided not to submit in the Grammy process. Their actions also followed years of feeling under-recognized. The Weeknd decided to boycott the ceremony following his controversial shut-out at the 2021 ceremony. The R&B superstar was thought to be a strong contender for album of the year for his fourth LP After Hours, which spent four consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, as well as for record and song of the year for his smash hit “Blinding Lights,” which became Billboard ‘s biggest Hot 100 song of all time. But when the 2021 Grammy Award nominations were revealed, The Weeknd’s name was nowhere to be found. The Weeknd initially expressed his frustration toward the Recording Academy by tweeting, “The Grammys remain corrupt.” In his second Twitter missive, he wrote that he went from planning a Grammys performance to being “not invited.” The Weeknd later stated in a Billboard cover story that his snub in the top categories felt like “a sucker punch.” Like The Weeknd, Wallen may find himself nominated despite his decision not to submit, for example, if McRae’s team submits their duet. The Weeknd was up for three awards at the 2022 ceremony thanks to his contributions to recordings by Ye (formerly Kanye West) and Doja Cat. Drake blasted the Grammys following The Weeknd’s surprising shut-out at the 2021 Grammys. “I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what once was the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to the artists that exist now and the ones that come after,” he wrote on Instagram. “This is a great time for somebody to start something new that we can build up over time and pass on to the generations to come.” Leading up to the 2022 Grammy Awards, Drake was initially announced as a nominee for best rap performance (for “Way 2 Sexy,” featuring Future and Young Thug) and best rap album (for Certified Lover Boy), but asked to have his name withdrawn from contention for both awards on Dec. 6, 2021. The Recording Academy honored his request and officially removed his nominations for both awards. Since then, Drake has received eight nominations – all for collaborations with other artists. Wallen’s representative declined to comment. Representatives from Big Loud, Republic and the Recording Academy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Source link

Gina Michelle DeBose Dies at 57

Ariana DeBose is mourning the death of her mother, Gina Michelle DeBose, who died on Aug. 17 at age 57 after battling Stage 3 ovarian cancer. In a touching post on Instagram on Tuesday (Aug. 19), DeBose wrote: “At 10:28 am on August 17th my gorgeous, hilarious, outspoken, warrior queen Mother – Gina Michelle DeBose – passed away due to complications with stage 3 ovarian cancer. I couldn’t be more proud of her and how she fought this insidious disease over the past 3 years. She was 57 years young. “She was my favorite person, my biggest fan and toughest critic. My best friend. She was my date to every important moment in my professional and personal life – and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It had always been the two of us for as long as I can remember. Through lean times, and there were many of those & green times. She fought like hell to give me a good life, a good education and every opportunity in the world. I wouldn’t be where I am without her. I meant it when I said my Oscar “is just as much hers as it is mine.” DeBose did just say that when she won an Oscar for best supporting actress in 2022 for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s reboot of West Side Story. “I’m gonna wrap this up and talk about my family. My mother, who is here tonight. Mama, I love you with my whole heart, and this is as much yours as it is mine.” DeBose had earlier received a Tony nomination for playing “Disco Donna” in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical in 2018. She also hosted the Tony Awards three years running from 2022-24. She was the first person of color to host three times in the show’s history, which dates to 1947. In her post, Ariana DeBose, 34, said her mom’s “life’s purpose, aside from being my mom, was educating young people. She passed just shy of delivering 30 years of service as a public school teacher (most currently 8th grade social studies). And, my god, did she thrive in a classroom. Her creativity knew no bounds. She was beloved and incredibly respected by her colleagues and students alike.” DeBose concluded her salute by saying: “For the record: my greatest and most proud achievement will always be to have made her proud. I love you mommy. Now travel amongst the seas, the winds and the angels as I know you always loved to do.” Source link

Does Alex Warren’s ‘Ordinary’ Feel Like a 10-Week No. 1?

One week after seeing his nine-week reign at No. 1 with breakout hit “Ordinary” interrupted by “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters, Alex Warren is back atop the Billboard Hot 100 this week once again. Explore See latest videos, charts and news “Ordinary” resumes its dominance for a milestone 10th week on the chart Aug. 23, helped in large part by a duet performance of the smash with country superstar Luke Combs — which the two delivered at Chicago’s Lollapalooza festival in July, and which they delivered to streaming services on Aug. 8. It also reigns on the Songs of the Summer chart for a 12th week, the chart’s entire run for 2025 thus far. Is it a surprising 10-week No. 1? And does it feel right as the likely Song of the Summer? Billboard staffers discuss these questions and more below. 1. Alex Warren’s “Ordinary” reaching the 10-week mark at No. 1: surprising or not surprising? Katie Atkinson: Progressively less surprising as the weeks wore on, but if you’d asked me back in June when it first reached the summit if it would still be topping the chart three months later, I never could have predicted this. Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” might be the closest comparison – which only spent one week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 last year, but has racked up a whopping 104 weeks (so far!) on the chart. What I’m saying is: Teddy walked in 2024 so Alex could run this year. Kyle Denis: Surprising. I hate to be a Negative Nancy, but I really did think a better and more interesting song would have knocked “Ordinary” off the top spot four or five weeks ago.  Jason Lipshutz: Not surprising. Once “Ordinary” elbowed its way to the top of the Hot 100 in June, every metric indicated that Alex Warren’s burly sing-along was a multi-platform smash, and that the song was in for an extended run at No. 1. Double-digit weeks atop the Hot 100 is rarefied air, and impressive for any artist — let alone a relative unknown like Warren prior to his breakthrough smash — but the signs that “Ordinary” could make it this far were there from the get-go.  Melinda Newman: Given how rare it is for any song to reach No. 1, much less hit this watermark, it’s surprising. It’s also surprising because of how polarizing the song is— as many people seem to hate it as love it. But what’s to hate? It is an uncynical song of unabashed devotion to one’s partner, with subtle religious overtones thrown in. Sure, it’s a little treacly, but it’s a legit, true love story. We’re in troubling times and people are gravitating toward a song that lets them escape into their own romantic tale. I think there’s still a stigma for male artists who come up through TikTok and were social influencers that doesn’t seem to affect women artists like Billboard cover girl Addison Rae, who came from the same Hype House collaborative group that spawned Warren.  Andrew Unterberger: Once it reached No. 1 for one week, 10 weeks was practically a lock. “Ordinary” is the exact kind of song whose reign is seemingly indefinite — broadly appealing across DSPs and radio formats, with major pop culture presence but not inextricably tied to any one trend or breakout moment. I thought 15+ weeks was almost certainly in play; it still might be, but now it’s got real challenges to clear first. 2. While “Ordinary” gave up the No. 1 spot to “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters last week, it’s back on top this week in part due to an official live performance with Luke Combs that’s been released to DSPs. Do you think this new live collaboration is a particularly interesting new part of the song’s story, or mostly just a one-week blip? Katie Atkinson: Now I kind of want a Luke Combs solo cover of the song with full country production (imagine the twinkly piano intro swapped with a plucky acoustic guitar instead), but I don’t see this live duet becoming a lasting part of the song’s story. What the Lollapalooza recording proves is how impressive it is that “Ordinary” had the juice to reclaim the top spot after a cultural phenomenon like “Golden” supplanted it. Kyle Denis: I’m going to go with the Luke Combs version being a one-week blip. It’s cool to see Alex embraced by a more established music star — particularly one from a different genre — but I don’t anticipate this version growing into a significant chapter of the song’s story.  Jason Lipshutz: I was ready to write off the Luke Combs-assisted live version of “Ordinary” as a festival stunt designed to entertain a Lollapalooza crowd and juice streaming numbers… but man, Combs sounds sort of perfect growling out those verses and going full blast on the chorus alongside Warren. “Ordinary” makes sense when revamped into a country-pop sing-along, and Combs proved with his “Fast Car” cover that he can add Nashville gravitas to a well-known hit. I could see this one getting a proper studio version and persisting. Melinda Newman: Country superstar Combs giving the song his blessing by performing it at Lollapalooza with Warren really counts for something and will help introduce the song to country fans who weren’t familiar with it yet. There’s something very sweet about two guys singing adoringly about their wives. Though they don’t sing together much, Warren holds his own on stage vocally with Combs and that’s no small feat. He sounds better live with Combs than he does on the record. Andrew Unterberger: More than demonstrating anything about “Ordinary,” it just demonstrates to me what a powerhouse vocalist Combs is. Warren is no slouch in that department either, but the second Combs lays into that first verse, he kinda makes the song his — he Kelly Clarksons the singer-songwriter, if you will. That might drive some new ears to the song, and deservedly so, but I imagine in the long term it’ll more

All the Clues She’ll Play Halftime

Taylor Swift has traveled all over the world on tour, setting numerous stadium attendance records throughout her career. But there’s still one highly coveted gig she hasn’t yet played: the Super Bowl. Though rumors about her headlining the coveted halftime show spring up just about every year before the actual performer is announced, the pop star hasn’t yet joined folks such as Kendrick Lamar, Usher, Rihanna and The Weeknd in crossing it off her list. That’s remained true even as she’s become more entrenched in the football world than ever before over the past two years, cheering on her Kansas City Chiefs tight end boyfriend Travis Kelce at many of his games — including two back-to-back Super Bowls — after the pair first started dating in 2023. Lately, though, fans have been wondering if that’s due to change — and soon. Especially as Swift gears up to release the Oct. 3-slated album The Life of a Showgirl — which she’s promised will be tailored for widespread commercial appeal, with a track list full of “bangers” produced by bona fide hitmakers Max Martin and Shellback — some of the 14-time Grammy winner’s listeners are beginning to suspect that the musician is hinting that the 2026 Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, will feature a spectacular showcase from pop’s biggest showgirl herself. The announcement for next year’s headliner could be just a few weeks away, as the past few years’ performers have all been unveiled in September. That means the timing of Swift coming out with a new album so soon after 2024’s The Tortured Poets Department would perfectly align with a Super Bowl reveal. (But honestly, baby, who’s counting?) With all that in mind, Billboard is keeping track of all the ways Swift might be hinting that she’ll play more of a role in next year’s big game than simply supporting her favorite player in the stands. Keep reading to see all the possible clues that the musician is headlining Super Bowl LX below. The Super Bowl Talk on ‘New Heights’ On Aug. 13, Swift announced the Oct. 3 release date of The Life of a Showgirl at the same time as her debut episode on Travis and Jason Kelce’s New Heights podcast dropped. The topic of the Super Bowl came up casually (or perhaps, not so casually) a couple of times, including when the pop star revealed that she learned she’d purchased the rights to her master recordings just a few months after she attended the 2025 Super Bowl. She discussed the event — and more specifically, its halftime program — again later on in the episode while detailing how little she used to pay attention to football growing up. “My relationship with sports was like, I grew up in Pennsylvania, I always heard my dad yelling at the screen watching Eagles games,” she said. “I was up in my room playing guitar, learning instruments, playing piano — I was focused on different things. I would go to sporting events so that I could sing the national anthem. I know every halftime show from the Super Bowls, but I didn’t watch the sports.” Were all of those mentions of the Super Bowl just happenstance, or was Swift hinting at something more? With her, one can never be sure. The Sourdough Also on New Heights, Swift just so happened to shout out one of her new favorite hobbies: “Right now we’re deep in a sourdough obsession that has taken over my life … I’m really talking about bread 60% of the time now.” Why is that significant? Two reasons. Not only is Sourdough Sam the name of the mascot for the San Francisco 49ers — aka the team whose Levi’s Stadium home is the site of next year’s Super Bowl — but the next NFL season-ending game will be the 60th Super Bowl, matching the percentage Swift used to describe her high level of bread talk as of late. The Suspicious “47” Much like the topic of the Super Bowl itself, Swift repeatedly brought up a certain number while on New Heights: 47. Following a particularly energetic intro from Jason Kelce listing her accomplishments at the beginning of the episode, the singer said, “Thank you for screaming for like 47 seconds for me, that was so nice!” Later, when Jason asked how many countries she’d visited over the course of her Eras Tour, Swift quipped, “47,000,” even though the real answer is 21. Stay with us. In the sequence of 149 total shows Swift played while on her global Eras trek, the 47th one took place in July 2023 at Levi’s Stadium — the same place where SBLX is set to go down next February. The musician also chose a sparkly orange outfit to wear while performing “Shake It Off” at one of her shows in Santa Clara (as pictured above), which was possibly one of the earliest Easter Eggs she deployed to tease the distinctly orange color scheme of her then-unannounced Life of a Showgirl album. You may be wondering if placing such significance on the numbers 47 and 60 is too much of a stretch — but it’s worth remembering that Swift is a known fan of hiding clues about her next moves in numbers. Even on New Heights, she said, “The art of the Easter Egg … there’s do’s and don’ts. I love numerology, I love math stuff, I love dates. That stuff I find really fun.” The Levi’s of a ‘Showgirl’ Every brand from Target to Crumbl, FedEx, McDonald’s and more shared Swift-themed posts in light of her stepping into the Showgirl era, but one in particular stands out. Denim company Levi’s — the company behind Levi’s Stadium — shared a video of someone sewing a sparkly orange tag into the pocket of a pair of jeans in honor of the pop star announcing her new album. “subtle swap for the big day,” the caption read. Now, the post may have just been
