Joe Hickerson Death, Folk Archivist at Library of Congress Dead at 89

Joe Hickerson, a singer-songwriter who served as the lead archivist for folk music at the Library of Congress for 25 years has died at 89. According to The New York Times, Hickerson passed away on Aug. 17 at a care facility in Portland, Ore., as confirmed by his partner, Ruth Bolliger. Explore See latest videos, charts and news At the height of folk revival, Hickerson began what became more than a quarter-century tenure at the Library of Congress in 1963, swiftly establishing himself as a knowledgeable guide to the sometimes convoluted collections of recordings, documents and oral histories that were vital to performers, songwriters and historians of the genre. The Times noted that Hickerson was a physical embodiment of the massive library’s holdings, thanks to his work memorizing hundreds of traditional songs from around the world, from the lyrics and melodies to the history of each tune and its provenance. The Library of Congress is nation’s largest public collection of sound recordings and radio broadcasts with more than 3.5 million recordings representing 110 years of sound recording history, including half a million LPs, 450,000 78-RPM discs, 200,000 CDs and many more on formats ranging from wires, cylinders, music box discs and others. In addition to his archival work, Hickerson was a folk performer, regaling audiences with a stripped-down, conversational style he referred to as “vintage pre-plugged paleo-acoustic.” Joseph Charles Hickerson was born on Oct. 20, 1935 in Highland Park. Ill. and first became interested in folk music after seeing a 1948 performance by beloved folk singer/labor activist Pete Seeger at a campaign event for the Progressive Party. Before launching his career in music preservation, Hickerson attended Oberlin College in Ohio from 1953-1957. It was there that he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics, while also expanding his passion for folk music by helping to organize Seeger’s performances at the liberal arts college and at other universities, as well as serving as the first president of the Oberlin Folk Song Club and fronting the group the Folksmiths. A bio from his personal archives at Indiana University, where his papers are kept, noted that he became friendly with Seeger and went on to write two verses to one of Seeger’s most popular songs, 1960’s “Where Have All the Flowers Gone.” One of the verses went: “Where have all the soldiers gone?/ Long time passing/ Where have all the soldiers gone?/ Lone time ago/ Where have all the soldiers gone?/ Gone to graveyards, every one/ When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?” After graduating from Oberlin, Hickerson and the Folksmiths released their album We’ve Got Some Singing to Do, which featured the first known commercial recording of the beloved Black spiritual “Kumbaya,” a folk staple that has been recorded by everyone from Joan Baez to children’s performer Raffi, Odetta, Sweet Honey in the Rock and many others around the world. Hickerson went on to study folklore and ethnomusicology in graduate school at IU in Bloomington, where his master’s thesis was a 1,300-item annotated bibliography of North American Indian music north of Mexico, which received funding from the National Science Foundation. During his years at IU, Hickerson frequently performed on and off campus, including stints as a strolling minstrel at the annual Madrigal Dinner, as well as gigs singing folk songs at the B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation chapter. He was also a founding member of the IU Folksong Club and a director and host of a number of radio and TV programs on folklore and folk music that aired on the public radio station WFIU. During his time as a reference librarian at the Library’s Archive of Folksong Hickerson released the albums Folk Songs and Ballads Sung by Joe Hickerson With a Gathering of Friends (1970) and the two-volume collection of traditional songs Drive Dull Care Away (1976). Hickerson retired as the director of the Folksong division in 1998 after more than three decades. Source link

Lil Nas X’s Dad Says Star Is in ‘Good Spirits’ After Felony Charges

Despite facing prison time after an alleged altercation with police Aug. 21, Lil Nas X is keeping his head high, according to his father, Robert Stafford. In a video captured by TMZ on Monday (Aug. 25), Stafford gave an update on his son’s well-being after the pop star was arrested for allegedly charging at police officers in Los Angeles. “He’s in good spirits, he’s all right,” his father told reporters. “He’s very remorseful for what happened. But, it can happen to any family — he’s gonna get the help that he needs and just keep him in your prayers. Give him the same grace and mercy that God gives everyone.” Stafford’s statement came on the same day as his son’s arraignment hearing, where the “Old Town Road” singer pleaded not guilty to three felony counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. Lil Nas X’s bail was subsequently set at $75,000. Police claim that on the morning of Aug. 21, Lil Nas was found wandering around Los Angeles while naked, and that when law enforcement arrived on the scene, he allegedly “charged at officers and was taken into custody.” Police took him to a local hospital for a suspected overdose before booking the rapper and holding him in jail over the weekend. When asked by reporters whether or not his son was under the influence of illegal drugs during the alleged incident, Stafford immediately responded “absolutely not,” and emphasized that Lil Nas is “doing great mentally.” The rapper’s attorney Drew Findling also told the outlet that his client, who he pointed out was “26 years old and never been in trouble a split second in his life,” would not have his life and career derailed by “one little moment.” When asked about whether or not drug use or mental health issues played a factor in the case, Findling said it’s “impossible to have answers for you the first time walking out of court.” Get weekly rundowns straight to your inbox Sign Up Source link

Green Day Announce ‘Wild Road Trip’ Comedy ‘New Years Rev’

Green Day are headed to the big screen. The veteran punk group announced on Monday (Aug. 25) that they have teamed up with good pal director Lee Kirk (Ordinary World) on a “wild road trip comedy” titled New Years Rev. The band promised that the movie is “packed with your favorite Green Day songs” as well as “loaded with mischief.” Among the stars of the film they said is their love letter to “road trip movies, ’90s nostalgia, and chasing the dream no matter how ridiculous it gets,” are Mason Thames (The Black Phone), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Jenna Fischer (The Office), Angela Kinsey (The Office), comedian Bobby Lee (Reservation Dogs) and others. According to a description of the movie that will get its world premiere on Sept. 12 at the Toronto International Film Festival, “A garage rock trio gets the opportunity of a lifetime to open up for Green Day and hit the road across America to make the gig. The only problem is… they didn’t realize it was a prank.” Green Day — singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool — co-produced the movie that follows the travails of punk rockers The Analog Dogs, whose greatest wish in life is to meet their heroes. After finding a way to get their demo to the trio, they get what they think is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to open for Green Day at a New Year’s Eve show, only to find out that they’ve been punk’d by one of their brothers. “Nevertheless, naively optimistic, the young trio set off on the road from Kansas to California, with wide-eyed dreams of being on stage alongside their heroes,” read the description. The soundtrack features more than a dozen Green Day songs. Green Day will continue their ongoing world tour on Wednesday (Aug. 27) with a gig at Lima, Peru’s San Marcos Stadium. Check out Green Day’s post below. So big news, we made a movie!  A thread 🧵: 1. We teamed up with our good friend Lee Kirk on a wild road trip comedy titled New Years Rev about a garage band (Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman & Ryan Foust) who think they’re opening for us… except plot twist, it’s a prank. pic.twitter.com/JOtm0tNBTO — Green Day (@GreenDay) August 26, 2025 Get weekly rundowns straight to your inbox Sign Up Source link

Selena Gomez, benny blanco & The Marias Top Latin Pop, Airplay Charts

Just a week after “Ojos Tristes” by Selena Gomez, benny blanco and The Marías claimed the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay chart, the song ascends to the top of the overall Latin Airplay chart dated Aug. 30. The achievement is driven by a 10% increase in audience impressions, to 9 million, earned across United States Latin radio stations during the Aug. 15-21 tracking week, according to Luminate. Explore See latest videos, charts and news In addition to its winning streak, “Ojos Tristes” notches a second consecutive week at No. 1 on the Latin Pop Airplay chart. Plus, it extends its reign to 14 weeks at the summit on Hot Latin Pop Songs. The combined three-chart supremacy makes the song the first to occupy the No. 1 position across the three charts in 2025. “Ojos Tristes” led the inaugural Hot Latin Pop Songs chart dated April 12, where it has since spent a notable 14 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1. Only two other songs have interrupted its reign: Karol G’s “Milagros” (two weeks in May), and her collaboration with Marco Antonio Solís, “Coleccionando Heridas” (five weeks between July and August). While “Ojos Tristes” triples up ruling Latin Airplay, Latin Pop Airplay and Hot Latin Pop Songs in 2025, six other songs have secured double coronations across Latin Airplay and Latin Pop Airplay in the same week: Shakira’s “Soltera” (Jan. 4), Danny Ocean and Kapo’s “Imagínate” (April 26), Gloria Estefan’s “Raíces” (May 10), Rauw Alejandro’s “Carita Linda” (July 19), Morat and Camilo’s “Me Toca A Mí” (Aug. 2), and “Soleao” by Myke Towers and Quevedo (Aug. 9). Further, “Ojos Tristes” delivers The Marias’ first-ever chart-topper on the overall Latin radio ranking. Meanwhile, with the three-way collab, Gomez and blanco each celebrate a third and second No. 1, respectively. Gomez returns after four years, following the success of “Baila Conmigo” with Rauw Alejandro in March 2021. For blanco, the journey to the peak is considerably quicker, whose featured turn on Myke Towers’ “Degenere” led for one week in May. All charts (dated Aug. 30) will update on Billboard.com Tuesday, Aug. 26. For all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X and Instagram. Source link
