Cash Cobain Says Jay-Z Told Him He’s ‘Not Dropping an Album’

When Jay-Z calls, you pick up the phone. Cash Cobain revealed on Wednesday (Sept. 10) that he received a call from Hov to straighten out the narrative regarding rumors of a new project from the rap mogul being on the horizon, which Cash pushed during his appearance on Billboard Unfiltered Live Sept. 3. “When I was on the phone with Hov he said that he is absolutely not dropping an album,” Cash wrote to X, along with six laughing-crying emojis. “that messed me up tho.” Jay is very aware of what’s being said about him in the culture, and the “This is Hov” text message meme came to life for the Bronx rapper. It all came about after Cash joined Billboard Unfiltered Live alongside Zeddy Will, during which he named Jay-Z as the king of New York, but teased that he heard that the Roc Nation boss was gearing up to release a new project. “I heard Jay-Z about to drop some s—t. That’s what I heard,” he said at the time. “That’s about to shake the world.” It’s been eight years since Jay’s last solo album, 4:44, dropped. Primarily produced by No I.D., the set debuted atop the Billboard 200 with 262,000 album units earned in the first week. There has been fan speculation about a new Jay-Z project being made somewhere in the world, as 2026 would be 30 years since his Reasonable Doubt debut, and the 55-year-old popped out at a handful of dates on wife Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour. Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez Speaks On New York City’s First Casino

For the past five years, Roc Nation has been fighting to make New York City’s first casino a reality, and this month they’ll learn whether their historical new venture will actually happen. JAY-Z and Roc’s longtime CEO Desiree Perez have been pushing relentlessly to obtain one of three new gaming licenses being given out by the city. The license would allow them to convert Times Square’s 1515 Broadway into a expansive casino and entertainment destination. Explore See latest videos, charts and news As part of the bid, Roc Nation — who is partnering with Caesars Palace and SL Green — has also committed $250 million in community support over the next 10 years. The money will go towards community programs aimed at supporting Broadway, public health, safety and security in Times Square and the surrounding neighborhoods and more. Roc additionally pledged to donate 0.5% percent of the casino’s revenue to the West Side Community Fund, and announced earlier this week that in tandem with Ryan Williams and Cadre will allow local New Yorkers to invest in the casino for a minimum of $500. With all of this in play, Perez has spent the last five years talking to the Manhattan community about all of these initiatives, some of whom have expressed worry about the congestion and tourism a JAY-Z-helmed casino could bring to an already overstuffed area of the city. Roc Nation will finally learn their fate later this month, with the last public hearing on the project set for Thursday morning (Sept. 11). When asked how Roc Nation is feeling at this precarious moment, Perez tells Billboard over the phone that they’re cautiously optimistic but that, “You just never know.” “It’s more of trying to make sure that we’re covering all bases and that the right information is out there,” Perez says. Billboard briefly chats with the Roc Nation CEO about the plans for the casino, how they’re handling the pushback and how this will impact the future of New York City. A pretty consequential decision will made this month in regards to the Times Square casino. What’s the feeling among your team and your collaborators, and what are you hoping to see during the public hearing on September 11? Well I’m hoping to see between now and September 11 as much as possible from the community and all the work that we’ve done for them to come out and support us. Roc Nation has always been about cultural influence and community impact. Why did a Times Square casino make sense as the next major project for Roc Nation? Well, if we go back five years it’s a license that was basically — Albany decided they were gonna approve these three license that was coming to down state New York City. So we knew it was something that was coming to New York and it’s an incredible opportunity. Whomever gets this license ultimately is set to make billions of dollars through the lifetime of the license, and so it’s obviously an incredible financial opportunity. But then it’s also an opportunity for us when we do any business we always try to touch and impact community as much as we can. So it felt like the right opportunity for us as New Yorkers to go ahead, turn around and say, Ok, well these are the different projects. I mean, imagine if we have access to this kind of capital and this kind of opportunity what we could do for the community. The amount of money you’re pledging to donate is truly staggering. How did this comprehensive list of initiatives come together? Through different meetings with the community boards. We went in and did town halls, if you will, and spoke to the community and heard what their needs were. So we took a lot of feedback from them including not just the $250 million that we’re giving back in direct community investment, but also the .5 percent in perpetuity of the license being there. So that came directly from the people. When they came back with their concerns, we turned around and said, “OK, so who’s the right partner for us to partner with on security? Who’s the right partner for LGBTQ initiatives? Who’s the right partner for mental health?” We found partners throughout and then just bucketed the amounts that we needed by having conversations with the professionals. On that note, the plan includes over $83 million for cameras, extra patrols, and security upgrades. Times Square already has one of the highest police presences in the city and the country, with mixed results — why will your initiatives work better than what’s already in place? I don’t know that it’d work better, I think it will enhance what’s there. I think it also is not just for Times Square, we’ve actually expanded this to hit the community in our surrounding areas. So I think we’re going above and beyond. It’s not just where the casino is. We’re gonna be touching most of the Hell’s Kitchen area and it’s designed so that the neighbors, the people living near [the casino] can feel safer. Again, it’s more of an augmentation, we’re working with an ex-NYPD commissioner to come up with these plans. So it’s meant to enhance what already exists. The partnership with Ryan Williams and Cadre is unique — allowing New Yorkers to invest in the casino for as little as $500. How do you see this shifting the dynamics of wealth and ownership in the city? It’s just us putting ourselves in our own shoes. We are the people and that’s how we view ourselves. We see ourselves more like community people and what the community needs. In this case, why can’t someone who lives nearby or in The Bronx or somewhere in New York City, they wanna invest in this project, they hear how much money this is gonna make — it stands to make money the minute it opens it’s not like there is a loss

CMA Awards New Artist of the Year Winners Over 30: Full LIst

If country/rock musician Stephen Wilson Jr. wins the Country Music Association Award for new artist of the year on Nov. 19, he’ll make history as the oldest winner in that category to date. Wilson is 46. The CMA has presented the award for new artist of the year (known as the Horizon Award through 2007) 44 times. As the years have gone by, the winners have gotten appreciably older. Of the first 10 winners (1981-1990), just two were 30 or older (or had a lead singer over 30). Of the last 10 winners (2015-2024), six were 30 or older (or had a lead singer over 30). It used to be, if an artist was 30, certainly 35, and hadn’t made it yet in country music, their prospects were not looking good. Now, an artist in that age range, or even a bit older, might still break through. Jelly Roll was 38 when he won two years ago. Ashley McBryde and Jimmie Allen were both 36 when they won in 2019 and 2021, respectively. All but seven of the 44 winners to date are solo artists. One duo, The Judds, has won the award, as have six groups – Sawyer Brown, The Chicks, Rascal Flatts, Lady A, Zac Brown Band and The Band Perry. Of these seven acts, just two – Rascal Flatts and Zac Brown Band – had a lead singer who had reached 30 by the time they won. Wilson is a long-shot in this year’s best new artist race. The other nominees are Tucker Wetmore, 25; Ella Langley, 26; Zach Top, 27; and Shaboozey, 30 – three of whom have been nominated in marquee categories at the CMA Awards. Top is up for album, single and song of the year. Langley is up for single and song of the year. Shaboozey was up for single of the year last year. Here, we look back at every solo artist, or lead vocalist for a duo or group, who had reached 30 by the time they won the CMA Award for new artist of the year (or the predecessor Horizon Award). We show their age when they won (rounded off to the nearest month). They are listed in ascending order. Mark Chesnutt, 30 years and one month Won: 1993 CMA Awards total: 2 Notes: He also won vocal event of the year as a featured artist on George Jones’ “I Don’t Need Your Rockin’ Chair,” a top 40 hit on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Holly Dunn, 30 years and two months Won: 1987 CMA Awards total: 1 Notes: Dunn was also nominated that year for song of the year for “Daddy’s Hands,” her first top 10 hit on Hot Country Songs, and vocal duo of the year for her teaming with Michael Martin Murphey. Lainey Wilson, 30 years and six months Image Credit: Terry Wyatt/WireImage Won: 2022 CMA Awards total: 9 Notes: Wilson has won female vocalist of the year the last three years running and also won entertainer of the year in 2023. Gretchen Wilson, 31 years and four months Won: 2004 CMA Awards total: 2 Notes: She also won female vocalist of the year the following year. Zac Brown (Zac Brown Band), 32 years and three months Won: 2010 CMA Awards total: 1 Notes: The band has been nominated for vocal group of the year 14 times without winning. The band also won best new artist at the Grammys. Gary LeVox (Rascal Flatts), 32 years and four months Won: 2002 CMA Awards total: 7 Notes: Rascal Flatts won vocal group of the year six years in a row, from 2003-08. They were the first group to win six years in a row since The Statler Brothers (1972-77). Little Big Town equaled the feat with six consecutive wins from 2012-17. Old Dominion surpassed it with seven consecutive wins from 2018-24. Jon Pardi, 32 years and six months Won: 2017 CMA Awards total: 1 Notes: Pardi was also nominated for single of the year for “Dirt on My Boots,” which was No. 1 on Hot Country Songs for three weeks. Keith Urban, 34 years Image Credit: Adele Starr/Getty Images Won: 2001 CMA Awards total: 12 Notes: Urban won entertainer of the year in both 2005 and 2018. Suzy Bogguss, 35 years and nine months Won: 1992 CMA Awards total: 2 Notes: Bogguss won album of the year two years later as a featured artist on Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles. Songs That Inspired the Broadway Star

These days, when she’s not busy casting her spell upon packed Broadway audiences, two-time Drag Race champ Jinkx Monsoon makes playlists. But we’re not talking about a few dozen songs or a couple hours of music — these are Spotify odysseys encompassing hundreds of songs, musical monsoons that you could fall asleep to, wake up and find that you’re not even halfway through. Unlike most playlists, these weren’t created to be shared with the world, but they do serve a purpose. Monsoon – who recently solidified her status as a Broadway force thanks to a show-stealing turn in Pirates! The Penzance Musical, followed by her taking over the lead role in the Tony-winning smash Oh, Mary! — uses these playlists to prepare for acting roles, spinning them while rehearsing and queuing them up before showtime to get in character. Her playlist for Oh, Mary! – which she exclusively shared with Billboard and is allowing us to offer a peek into below – has more than 500 songs, clocks in at over 27 hours and is still being updated by the creatively restless star. These songs are informed by how Jinkx sees the stifled, manic Mary Todd Lincoln, how audiences react to the character and how she herself relates to the role. “What I would say overall about the playlist is that it is volatile,” Monsoon tells Billboard. “Mary is grieving the loss of one relationship while celebrating the beginning of a new relationship, and those are opposite ends of the spectrum. The songs bounce back and forth between heartbreak, breakup songs and falling-in-love for the first time songs.” While Oh, Mary! takes place in the 1860s, most of the songs on her playlist run from the 1920s to present day. (Aside from the fact that recorded music which could be played back didn’t become a thing until the 1870s, Monsoon quips that listening to songs popular during the American Civil War felt “a little too prescient” given what’s going on now.) Even so, this expansive playlist leapfrogs through decades, genres and zip codes, revealing Monsoon’s staggering knowledge of entertainment over the last 150 years and her intense dedication to doing right by the role, her co-stars and the audience. (Unsurprising, Jinkx kills it as Mary. Her performance, which runs through Sept. 28, is a no-notes masterclass in comedy with empathy. Simply put, Oh, Mary! remains the best thing on Broadway.) Jinkx Monsoon in OH, MARY! on Broadway. MurphyMade From Chappell Roan to Laufey to Helen Kane to songs from the cinema (Poor Things, Shock Treatment, Phantom of the Paradise, Bugsy Malone and The Lion King), here are 19 songs from Monsoon’s Oh, Mary! playlist, along with her insights into how they help her unpack and inhabit this indelible character. Jessica Harper, “Old Souls” and “Me of Me” “Jessica Harper’s voice just resonates with me. What’s great with both her characters [in the 1981 film Shock Treatment and 1974’s Phantom of the Paradise] is that she’s being seduced by the life of a performer. ‘Old Souls’ in Phantom reminds me of the moment between Mary’s teacher and Mary when they’re having a very intimate conversation about past lives and reincarnation – which is such a weird conversation to be having in a play that is set in the 1860s. And then (Harper’s) songs in Shock Treatment, she’s grappling with the potential end of her marriage while also being tempted into the life of being a starlet. She sings about feeling like a cat in heat and feeling ready to love herself. And Mary’s horny. She doesn’t even know what all the feelings are, because she’s very sexually repressed, but she is horny, and she doesn’t even know the word horny. She just knows that something’s going on down there that needs tending. There’s a (Shock Treatment) song called ‘Me of Me’ that is just (Harper) singing about how wonderful she is and how ready she is to be a goddess.” Peggy Lee, “Is That All There Is?” “(‘Is That All There Is?’) is a song I resonate with because I don’t think that song is about giving up. Yeah, it sounds a little bit like apathy, but that’s not what it is. To me, it’s realizing that all the things were promised in life that are going to be ‘the thing that changes everything,’ guess what? It’s just another experience. I’ve been there. I was told, ‘If this ever happens, your life is going to change forever.’ And guess what? It happened, and I’m still here, just still muddling through the way I always have been. And you can look at it the way of, ‘So why give a sh-t?’ Or you can look at it like, ‘Isn’t life so beautiful that we just get to have experience after experience until the end?’ And then the idea of saying to God at the end of your life, ‘Is that all you got?’ That’s just a diva move. “Also, Mary has something that I really resonate with — and probably my biggest connection to the character — is she’s so bored. She doesn’t want to be an alcoholic. She wants to be on stage. That’s the only thing that can hold her attention. And I’m not saying I’m that level of bored, but I have an addictive personality. That’s something I’ve dealt with in my life, I’ve been very candid about that, so I relate to Mary in that. I have also found the best place to put that (energy) is into my work — I found a way to really dig into my work, and that work has purpose. I don’t feel like I don’t feel like your average workaholic, I feel like someone who gets a lot out of work. I really just love the idea that Mary knows what she wants in life, and she’s sick of not getting it.” Bette Davis, “I’ve Written a Letter to Daddy” “’I’ve Written a Letter to Daddy’ is like a vaudeville

Travis Kelce’s 1587 Prime Steakhouse Has Signature Taylor Swift Drink

The grand opening of Kansas City Chiefs teammates tight end Travis Kelce and quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ new steakhouse, 1587 Prime, is just a week away. The upscale eatery got a soft open on Monday (Sept. 8) for friends and family, where it seems likely that Kelce’s fiancée, Taylor Swift, sipped on one of the restaurant’s signature cocktails mixed in her honor: The Alchemy. According to the Kansas City Star, the drink that shares a title with a Travis-coded song from Swift’s 2024 The Tortured Poets Department album, features her preferred liquor, a clarified citrus vodka blend, along with dry curaçao, aronia berry, cranberry, strawberry, lime and oolong tea. She’s not the only one who gets her own bespoke cocktail. TMZ reported that Mahomes has the “Showtime,” a mix of aged rum blend with coconut, Coors Light syrup, lime and soda, while Kelce’s “Big Yeti” mashes up Gentleman’s Cut Bourbon with Bulleit Rye with nocino, demerara and bitters. While the full menu for the upscale eatery has not yet been posted, an Instagram preview in which Kelce and Mahomes sample some of the dishes reveal that they include the A5 Carpaccio (Wagyu beef, pickled mushrooms, pine nuts, umami aioli, shaved black truffle), as well as Tuna tartare (with truffle ponzu, avocado, chili oil, lime air and airy rice cracker) and the Tajima Wagyu beef (whiskey barrel aged soy, triple inferno salt). There’s also a chopped salad (with beef salami, chickpeas, tomatoes, pepperoncini, aged provolone, olives roasted pine nuts, artichokes and a red wine vinaigrette), steak tartare (hand-cut wagyu, egg yolk, truffle aioli, crispy capers, shallot, toasted sourdough), a “33” burger, a steak flight, Shrimp Diablo, Togarasi fried chicken (with hot chive, wasabi and green onion) and a Mahomes ketchup flight. The Star described the interior of the restaurant as having a “tunnel-like entrance meant to emulate the entrance into a stadium. On the ground floor, a 20-seat bar will neighbor a stage that hosts nightly live music. More banquet seating is scattered throughout the restaurant, which has 238 seats in total.” There is also a winding staircase that leads visitors to a panoramic view of the city, with a 40-person private dining room with private entrance upstairs as well.    Source link

Offset Says There’s No Drama About Supporting Ex Cardi B’s Upcoming LP

Cardi B and Offset aren’t a couple anymore, but that doesn’t mean he can’t support his ex’s upcoming album. When TMZ caught up with the “Bodies” rapper on Tuesday (Sept. 9), they asked if he’s worried that Cardi’s eagerly anticipated sophomore album, Am I the Drama?, might bump his recently released LP Kiari off the charts. “Are your kids gonna have both their parents nominated for album of the year?,” the TMZ photog asked. “For sure,” Offset assured him. “You guys gonna go up against each other maybe?” TMZ asked. “Never. No, no, no,” Offset said. “I just want all peace, man, for us to win, everybody gotta win. We got kids to take care of, we got to catch the dubs.” The couple share three children together, daughter Kulture Kiari Cephus, 7, son Wave Set Cephus, 4, and one-year-old daughter Blossom. Though Cardi filed for divorce — for a second time — from Offset in July 2024, ‘Set said he will absolutely support his ex when she drops finally drops the long-awaited follow-up to her 2018 Billboard 200 chart-topping debut studio album Invasion of Privacy. “For sure,” he said. “That s–t hard, she’s gonna do her big one, too.” Cardi — who was honored with the 2025 Billboard Impact of the Year Award at the R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players event in Brooklyn earlier this week — recently took to the streets of New York City to promote her LP. She set up shop on Saturday on a busy sidewalk, where she laid out copies of her album on a sheet and shouted out wildly bargain prices to passersby. “My label said I gotta get out in these streets and sell this album,” Cardi captioned the video of her stunt on Instagram. Am I the Drama? is slated to drop on Sept. 19.    Get weekly rundowns straight to your inbox Sign Up Source link

The Irish band also received a Mercury Prize nomination for their debut album, 2019’s Dogrel, and have since gone on to headline London’s Finsbury Park as well as arenas across the U.K. and Ireland. Fontaines D.C. snagged best international group at the 2025 BRIT Awards, their second win in that category. Sam Fender, who boasts 2025’s biggest opening week sales in the U.K. so far, is nominated for People Watching. The North Shields-born musician was previously nominated for his second LP Seventeen Going Under and performed a number of large headline shows this summer, including the 80,000-capacity London Stadium and Manchester’s Wythenshawe Park. FKA twigs is also recognised for third LP EUSEXUA, her highest-charting record yet on the Billboard 200 (No. 24). CMAT’s Euro-Country, which recently peaked at No. 2 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart, gives the Irish country-pop star her second nomination for a Mercury Prize following Crazymad, For Me (2023).  Wolf Alice’s The Clearing picks up a nod, and follows their 2018 victory for Visions of a Life. Pulp’s comeback LP More, their first since 2001, and PinkPantheress’ mixtape Fancy That also feature on the nominations list. The list is rounded out by Jacob Alon’s In Limerance; Emma-Jean Thackray’s Weirdo; Joe Webb’s Hamstrings & Hurricanes; Martin Carthy’s Transform Me Then Into A Fish; and Pa Salieu’s Afrikan Alien. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Invite Bandcamp Users to Choose Price

After pulling their tunes from Spotify, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are flipping the script once again by inviting fans to download their catalog on Bandcamp at whatever price they choose. Explore See latest videos, charts and news The prolific Australian psych-rock outfit have tagged all their downloadable albums as “name your price,” a generous promotion that has the hallmarks of Radiohead’s groundbreaking In Rainbows experiment from 2007, when the British band invited fans to pay whatever they wanted to download the then-new album, their first outside of the EMI machine. King Gizz, as they’re known in their homeland, and with their loyal fans everywhere, has applied the pay-what-you-want offer to their considerable catalogue, and fans have got into the spirit of the exercise. At the time of writing the entire top 25 digital albums on Bandcamp are from King Gizz. The rockers are in a giving mood, after recently pulling their music from Spotify, a protest to CEO and co-founder Daniel Ek’s personal investment in military AI. “Hello friends… A PSA to those unaware,” read a message on the band’s later Instagram Story, posted in late July. “Spotify CEO Daniel Ek invests millions in AI military drone technology… We just removed our music from the platform… Can we put pressure on these Dr. Evil tech bros to do better?… Join us on another platform.” They’ve done just that. King Gizz are no ordinary recording artists. At the time of writing, their discography numbers 27 studio albums, three EPs, and six live albums, a figure that could change any day now. In 2017, the Melbourne act promised, and delivered, five studio albums in a calendar year. Five years later, they did it again, by releasing five albums in the calendar year 2022. If Radiohead’s honest box concept is anything to go by, consumers won’t dig deep for King Gizz downloads. According to a 2007 study by Internet research group ComScore, which examined how consumers reacted to that unusual digital release strategy, 38% paid an average of $6. The rest paid nothing. The subsequent physical release was a conventional one, and a global hit. Since it was founded in 2008, Bandcamp boasts more than $1.57 billion paid to artists using the platform. Bandcamp downloads are available in MP3, FLAC and more, and supporters get unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app. Source link
