Chance the Rapper Says He Hasn’t Talked to Kanye West in ‘A Long Time’

Chance the Rapper and Ye don’t really talk anymore. The Chicago rapper sat down with the New Rory & Mal podcast as he rolls out Star Line, his first album since 2019’s The Big Day, and was asked about his current relationship with Ye (formerly Kanye West) and if some of the music they’ve worked on in the past was going to be on his upcoming project. “Nah, there’s nothing from those sessions on this album,” Chance said around the 37-minute mark. “There was one that could’ve been raw.” He added: “And I was gonna say…honesty is the best policy — I haven’t talked to him in a long time. He’s one of the most influential people in my music. He was at my wedding, our kids have hung out together. I’ll always love Kanye, but just being honest, I haven’t talked to him in a while. I feel like I’ve been hella busy — I’m working on sh–. He’s obviously been busy. I be trying not to take opportunities to diss mother—-ers or add too much to the story.” Explore See latest videos, charts and news He was then asked if he would try to talk to Ye once he drops his album and things settle down a bit, and Chance gave sort of a vague answer as he tried to choose his words wisely. “The way that I think about my world is, I be thinking about my day. So, what I gotta do that day and what I’m working on for the next two weeks, maybe six months,” he tried to explain. “My relationships and how I view people as friends and stuff is just, ‘Have I loved this person? And have they ever willfully and intentionally betrayed me?’ I got friends that I haven’t talked to in five or six, seven years. It’s not like I’m anticipating some conversation, some thing where it’s like, ‘All right, now it’s my time to fix you and tell your a– what you’ve been tweaking on.’ No sh– like that.” Chance continued by pointing out that their friendship dynamic is complicated because they aren’t “necessarily peers,” and that he holds Ye and his debut album in high regard. “I’m also a lot younger than them n—as,” he explained. “There’s also different ways that people can even have friendships, because we’re not necessarily peers. My first album that I consciously wanted to have was The College Dropout. So I have a different reverence for him, or just understanding of how my life went and how it influenced things I do. I think most rappers got a rapper that was they first album, and probably from they city. So, imagine if yours was Kanye West, and imagine if you worked with them, and imagine all that sh–.” He finished his answer by saying he’s in no rush to talk to his former collaborator. “I let people be people. I’m always gonna have my own opinions and I’ma always state my opinions,” he said. “For the most part, I’ma just be me, I’ma let people be them. And so no, there’s not a time where I’m like, ‘Man, I gotta make sure I hit up Kanye before I put this album out or after I put this album out,’ or anybody.” Back in 2022, a clip surfaced online of Ye yelling at Chance while they were in the studio, and the Coloring Book rapper told The Morning Hustle radio show that he was actually there to check on Ye’s mental health, and that the experience made him “evaluate” their friendship. “I did come out there to check on my friend,” he admitted. “Me and a lot of other people still have love for Ye. But he’s human, he’s not perfect. He was obviously going through it at that time. … It made me evaluate my friendship with him, for sure. I had never been so close to him going through an episode. At the end of the day, I definitely love the dude. That’s my guy. It sucks that sometimes people can exploit a moment that is a genuine moment.” Chance the Rapper’s Star Line album drops at midnight ET (Aug. 15.) You can watch the full episode below. Source link

Lizzo Made a Song About ‘Love Island USA’ JaNa & Kenny Breakup

Lizzo recorded a breakup anthem for Love Island USA season 6 alum JaNa Craig, following her recent split with co-star Kenny Rodriguez — and Craig absolutely loves it. The Grammy-winning star took to TikTok on Tuesday to share her two cents on the matter, singing, “Hol’ on, walk with me/ When it come to my people, I don’t play, I don’t play/ Like why would Kenny play like that with JaNa?/ Type sh–, know what I’m sayin’, know what I’m sayin’.” The couple broke up last month after almost a year of dating. In a July 29-dated Instagram Story, Craig wrote, “Discovering someone you loved isn’t who you thought they were and that the relationship you thought you were building hasn’t been genuine since day one has been truly devastating.” She called him out as a “manipulative liar” in a later IG Story following his own public statement about their split, in which he wrote, “Breakups are never easy, especially in the public eye. Sometimes, despite how deeply you care for someone, you come to the hard truth that the relationship was not something that could last long-term.” While catching up with TMZ outside LAX on Wednesday, Craig said she thought the tune was too good to be true. “It’s so cute because I’m getting so much love, and for it to be from Lizzo, you know what I mean? I know a lot of people are supporting me, but when it’s your favorite celebrity supporting you…,” she said before divulging her plans to go back to her hotel and make a TikTok about the song. And she did just that, captioning the clip, “No cause @lizzo we need to knowww …. And lmk if you need me for that music video #Lizzoiloveyou.” The “Truth Hurts” singer doubled down on her support by commenting, “Always team NayNay.” Get weekly rundowns straight to your inbox Sign Up Source link

Lil Yachty Says He ‘Manifested’ Working with Drake During Acid Trip

Lil Yachty manifested his working relationship with Drake. Yachty and his Concrete Boys collective stopped by PlaqueBoyMax‘s stream recently and was asked by the popular streamer how his and Drake’s working relationship came about. “I manifested it, bro,” he answered after he included the Toronto rapper on a list of some of the most talented people he’s worked with, alongside Tyler, The Creator and Juice WRLD. “I was doing acid one night and I was like, ‘Man, I would really love to work with Drake. That’s one of my favorite rappers.’ I was just talking to the abyss. I was speaking to, like, a higher power, and I manifested it. I did. This was years ago. This was before we ever did anything.” He added that they followed each other on social media before becoming close friends and collaborators. “He followed me, we was cool. We was on Finsta together and it was cool. But, like, I wanted to have a relationship,” he admitted. “That’s one of my best friends. Manifestation is real. Teyana Taylor on Ending Retirement for New Album ‘Escape Room’

Billboard gives Teyana Taylor her flowers — literally — in the latest installment of our “Takes Us Out” franchise. Five years after announcing her retirement from music, Taylor returns Aug. 22 with her fourth studio album, Escape Room. The multi-faceted creative — singer-songwriter, dancer-choregorapher, video director and actress —recently dropped by Casa de Flores in Encino, California, to arrange an assortment of red roses and chat with Billboard’s Gail Mitchell. Asked what prompted the end of her musical retirement during the conversation, Taylor referenced her 2020 Billboard cover story which followed the release of her gold-certified third studio project, The Album. “When I spoke to you five years ago, it wasn’t on my terms,” she begins. “I’ve returned now in a time when I get to come back on my terms. And that was important for me because … I don’t like to be stuck in a box. I don’t want to be stuck in one room. I’m a Glade plug-in: I’m going to plug in wherever I see a socket, wherever I see an outlet. “For me,” she continues, “why only make one room smell good when you can make the whole store smell good? What do I look like just being plugged up in a bathroom? I need to be plugged in all over! I must be able to smell the fruits of my labor everywhere I go. Coming back to music and being able to do it on my terms was a big turn-on for me.” And gauging by the response from her fan base, it’s a turn-on for them too, as Taylor clears the runway for Escape Room’s impending arrival. Revealed this week, the 22 songs comprising her fourth studio album boasts features by Jill Scott, Tyla, Lucky Daye and Kaytranada, plus her daughters Rue Rose and Junie Shumpert. Complementing the songs are monologues by a cast of powerful women’s voices belonging to Taraji P. Henson, Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash, Issa Rae and Regina King, among others. Taylor, who recently underwent emergency vocal cord surgery, had earlier trumpeted her return with the release of “Long Time” and “Bed of Roses.” Those accompanying videos, both of which feature her beau, actor Aaron Pierre, count 2.2 million and 1.2 million views, respectively, on YouTube. Camila Fernández Delves Into Heartbreak in New Album ‘La Fernández’

Though she is “happily married” today, Camila Fernández has also experienced disappointment. “I had my time of heartbreak,” the 27-year-old Mexican singer confesses. “Plus, I grew up with divorced parents, and my mom only listened to heartbreak songs.” So it’s no surprise that her new album La Fernández, released on Thursday night (Aug. 14), is full of them. In the follow-up to her 2023 album Camila Fernández, the heiress to one of Mexico’s greatest musical dynasties presents 10 ranchera songs with modern lyrics, from previously released singles “Se Cancela La Llorada,” “Pudimos Ser” and “No Puedo Dormir Sin Ti” to the focus track “La Loca Era Yo” and “De Llorar Se Me Secaron Los Ojos.” Produced by Orlando Aispuro — whom she recruited after noticing the twist he gave to Carín León’s music with “La primera cita” — La Fernández showcases a more mature side of the artist, with stronger themes blended with her personal style. “We did a songwriting camp where I was fully involved, and although I’m in a stable relationship [with husband Francisco Barba,] it was truly enriching to talk about heartbreak because these songs are performed with more intensity, and you connect with the audience a lot,” Camila tells Billboard Español. The daughter of Alejandro Fernández and granddaughter of Vicente Fernández is currently accompanying her father as the opening act on his De Rey a Rey tour, but she’s been pursuing her music career independently of her family ties for a while. “When I started in this profession, I asked my dad for advice, and he was very clear. He told me there were two paths: He could put everything on a silver platter for me, or I could fight for it on my own and enjoy it much more. That’s what I’m doing because I want him to feel proud of me,” Camila says. “He even thought my pregnancy would hold me back, and now he realizes it didn’t. Today, I have an excellent relationship with him, and I’ve earned his respect.” Determined, the mother of one adds: “I’m going to defend Mexican music fiercely because I want my daughter and future generations to keep singing my grandfather’s, my father’s, and my own songs. I want them to know about charrería and what it means to wear a charro suit with pride.” Below, Camila Fernández breaks down five essential songs from her new album, La Fernández. Listen to the full set here. “No Puedo Dormir Sin Ti” The intro with violins is very special, almost dramatic, setting the stage for the soft mariachi sound with guitars and trumpets. It’s one of my favorites. It was written for my daughter. Songwriters El David Aguilar and Arath Herce perfectly captured my feelings when I have to work, leave her behind, be away on a tour, and miss her. The video recreates what I feel when I step off the stage after a concert — I always call my daughter and tell her that I’m running to her arms. When I have time, we go to new places to create memories together. The melody is a romantic ranchera with very specific accordion touches that make it sound even better. “La Loca Era Yo” This is a mariachi-pop song about realizing you were wrong and that you were with a narcissistic person who blamed you for everything. You then realize it wasn’t true — you weren’t the crazy one. Written by Marcela de la Garza, the song wasn’t originally intended for me, but when it was sent to me, I loved it and made it my own. It has beautiful arrangements, with strings that accentuate the mariachi sound I love so much. This is the focus track, written by Marcela de la Garza, Osiris del Carmen Preciado, and Raúl Jiménez. “Lo Sabía” This is the story many women have experienced: Going back to an ex, knowing deep down that the relationship won’t work. Musically, the song’s structure is very defined. There’s a beautiful a cappella section — that silence allows my voice to shine perfectly. In the final verse and chorus, the emotion runs deep due to the theme. Arath Herce knew exactly how to write the precise words for a story like this. “Se Cancela La Llorada” A ranchera to pair with tequila, where the mariachi resonates in all its glory, accompanied by accordion and subtle tumbado touches. It’s one of those heartfelt songs that blends traditional and modern elements, especially in its lyrics. Written by three women — Erika Vidrio, known for her direct and powerful lyrics, along with Marcela de la Garza and Flor Naomi Castelán — they achieved the goal of inviting women to feel the pain of a breakup or disappointment, go out partying, but not cry over a bad love. “Pudimos Ser” Sometimes cowardice prevents us from trying a relationship that could have been wonderful but never happened. This song has a line that says it all: “We stayed in the ‘could have been.’” It’s the story of a love left unfinished. I was part of the songwriting team along with Mauro Muñoz, Rocío Gómez, and Lourdes Eunice Herrera. We managed to capture the story clearly, and many people will surely relate to it. Musically, the mariachi sounds very rustic — pure and traditional. It has a catchy chorus, and the ending is filled with emotion. Source link

Taylor Swift’s Impact Praised by Kansas City Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt

Amid the excitement surrounding Taylor Swift‘s upcoming album The Life of a Showgirl, the CEO of the Kansas City Chiefs is taking a moment to recognize her impact on the team’s fandom. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight published this week, Clark Hunt praised the pop star for bringing more people — primarily young girls — into Chiefs Kingdom via her romance with star tight end Travis Kelce. “This relationship with Taylor has garnered a whole lot more interest in the Chiefs,” he began. “I have people come up to me all the time and tell me, ‘Thank you.’ I’m like, ‘Thank you for what?’” he continued. “And then they tell me, ‘Thank you because my 10-year-old daughter now insists on watching NFL football with me.’ Of course, that’s largely because of Taylor Swift.” “It’s been fantastic and we love having her as part of the kingdom,” Hunt added, noting how devoted a fan Swift has become since she started attending games in 2023. “If you’ve ever seen any of those shots of her sitting in the box cheering on the team, when we make a big play, she’s as excited as anybody in the stadium. It’s great to have her support, for sure.” The interview arrives the same day the pop star shared the cover, release date and track list of her upcoming The Life of a Showgirl LP, which arrives Oct. 3. Featuring a collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter and a production team consisting only of Swift, Max Martin and Shellback, the 14-time Grammy winner described the project as full of “bangers” while guesting on Kelce’s New Heights podcast Wednesday. While she was on the show, Swift also opened up about her newfound love of the NFL. “I became a person who was running through the halls of my house screaming, ‘We drafted Xavier Worthy!’” she said, noting that she “fell in love” with football through dating Kelce. “My friends are like, ‘Who body-snatched you? What do you mean?’” The love goes both ways. Much of the sports community has embraced Swift over the past two years, with Hunt revealing to ET that he’s definitely going to be checking out Showgirl once it drops. “I’m very excited, the CEO said of the album. “I am a big fan of hers.” Source link

Molly Tuttle Talks Her New Pop-Tilted Album ‘So Long Little Miss Sunshine’

Guitarist, songwriter and singer Molly Tuttle has become one of bluegrass music’s most respected artists, building her reputation over the years through performances with family band The Tuttles With AJ Lee, solo projects, and her work with Golden Highway (a nod to Tuttle’s California roots). She was also the first woman to win the IBMA’s guitar player of the year award. Explore See latest videos, charts and news Tuttle credits the success of her Grammy-winning albums with Golden Highway—Crooked Tree (2022) and City of Gold (2023)—with helping her “gain that confidence and help me take a risk with my sound,” she tells Billboard. Her new solo album, So Long Little Miss Sunshine, out Friday (Aug. 15) on Nonesuch, is the result of that risk-taking — and marks a radical stylistic evolution from her earlier bluegrass-oriented work. The 12-song album is built on a bedrock of folk-pop, country and rock, while still folding in dashes of bluegrass. “When we finished the record and I heard it all, I was like, ‘This has Sheryl Crow vibes and I love it.’ She’s my hero,” Tuttle says. Over the past five years, in between playing more than 100 shows per year with Golden Highway, making her previous two projects (in addition to her solo 2024 EP Into the Wild) and seeing Crooked Tree win the IBMA’s album of the year award, Tuttle was culling songs that landed outside her usual purview. She wrote many of the songs on the new album with her partner, Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor. “Bluegrass is the music I grew up with and that’s such a kind of defined format to me. You can push boundaries, but you are still kind of writing within this established genre,” she says. “I so often write songs that don’t really fit into any specific style of music. I’ve gravitated towards this sound that is a little less defined and that made it scarier to make this album.” At the suggestion of manager Ken Levitan, Tuttle began sending songs to producer Jay Joyce, known for his work with Cage the Elephant, Miranda Lambert and Eric Church. “Ken felt he would have cool ideas for pushing my guitar playing in new directions,” she says. “Jay was great about that. He was like, ‘There are going to be a lot of guitar solos on this album.’ I feel like with me, when we are making a record, usually the solos are being passed around in the bluegrass world, a collaborative approach which is also really cool. But with this, it was also challenging when you’re taking longer guitar solos and playing throughout the whole record. You have to spend more time on it and make sure they have an arc of their own.” Tuttle and Joyce recorded the album last fall at Joyce’s Neon Cross studio in East Nashville, along with drummer/percussionists Jay Bellerose and Fred Eltringham, bassist Byron House and Secor on banjo, fiddle, harmonica, and vocal harmonies. “We had the drums in the isolation room, so it didn’t bleed into everything, but otherwise, we were all sitting there in the control room,” Tuttle says. “Usually when you’re in a studio, the musicians are on one side and the producer and engineers are on the other, but his studio is cool because the console and everything is in the middle, and we just sat around it. You’re all in this big space together.” The album opens with the stormy “Everything Burns.” “We decided to start things off with a big guitar moment, to kind of set the tone,” Tuttle says. “It’s still going to have that throughline of my guitar playing and it’s a singer-songwriter record, but it’s also a guitar record. The song kind of takes people by surprise. It’s one of the moodiest songs on the record, but it gets happier after that.” Indeed, the album brightens throughout the following 11 songs, including the pop-fueled “That’s Gonna Leave a Mark,” the sunny “Summer of Love,” and a cover of Icona Pop and Charli XCX’s 2012 hit “I Love It.” Elsewhere, songs such as “No Regrets” and “Golden State of Mind” delve into the emotional maturity and acceptance that come as the years progress. Her guitar-playing is as self-assured and precise as ever. Tuttle also plays banjo on “No Regrets” and album closer “Story of My So-Called Life,” something she hasn’t done on her records since she was a teenager. “Story of My So-Called Life” traces her journey from attending Boston’s Berklee College of Music to chasing her musical dreams. “Old Me (New Wig)” finds her opening up about moving away from habits and thoughts that aren’t self-beneficial. “It’s a little tongue-in-cheek,” she admits. “We thought we were just writing your kind of a breakup song, but we got to the chorus and we suddenly realized, ‘Maybe this is about breaking up with an old version of yourself that isn’t really serving you anymore–your insecurities or bad habits or anything that you need to leave behind. It’s probably my favorite of the new songs to play because I have people in the audience coming up to me and being like, ‘I have things that I’m struggling with or trying to leave in the past.’ It was just fun to come up with the line, ‘I got a new wig to get you out of my hair.’” The album’s cover artwork also plays into that idea, featuring photos of Tuttle in an array of wigs—and one photo with no wig—with each photo tying in with a song on the album. A blonde wig with a braid links to a line from the song “Rosalee,” while a dark wig represents “Everything Burns.” But the center photo showcases a bald Tuttle staring straight ahead at the camera. It’s a bold, confident statement for the singer-songwriter, who lost her hair when she was three due to the autoimmune condition alopecia areata. “It’s nice for me because I feel like I can just have fun with

Jimmy Fallon Uses Taylor Swift Songs to Explain Trump & Putin’s Summit

Jimmy Fallon had a clever way of explaining President Donald Trump‘s rocky relationship with Vladimir Putin, as the late-night host used Taylor Swift songs to break down their history ahead of an upcoming meeting between the two world leaders. On the Wednesday night (Aug. 13) episode of The Tonight Show, Fallon opened his monologue by saying, “Well, guys, the two big stories right now are Trump and Putin’s summit, and of course, Taylor Swift announcing her new album.” The host continued that he and his team decided that “there’s no better way to explain the summit than by breaking it down using Taylor Swift’s songs,” before launching into the segment. “For a long time, Trump would look at Putin and think, ‘You Belong With Me,’ and when the people told him to stay away from Putin, he’d just ‘Shake It Off’ and shout, ‘But Daddy I Love Him.’” “But recently, they’ve had some ‘Bad Blood,’ and of course, Putin has a terrible ‘Reputation,’” the comedian added as audience members cracked up, tying in references to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Epstein files scandal. “Americans are worried that Trump isn’t ‘Ready for It,’ because his brain is basically a giant ‘Blank Space.’” The timely monologue comes as — as Fallon mentioned — much of the world is either reeling over the news of Swift announcing her The Life of a Showgirl album or eyeing Trump’s upcoming meeting with Putin. The former took place on Tuesday (Aug. 12), with the pop star revealing more details about the Max Martin- and Shellback-produced LP on an episode of Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast the next day, while the latter is expected to take place in Alaska on Friday (Aug. 15). The twice-impeached POTUS has stated that he intends to threaten the Russian president with “very severe consequences” at the summit if the war in Ukraine doesn’t come to an end.
